A Puzzling Picnic
Letter from the editor
The Tejano music was loud, the students were smiling as they navigated the puzzling stations with their JLJ passport, and the parents were getting to know one another! On Saturday, April 30th, we again open our doors to over 150 Founding Families for our Family Fiesta Puzzling Picnic. It was an exciting event, full of puzzles, prizes, and gathering as a community.

Mrs. Williams was helping future JLJ students with their "Snake Puzzles," though it was us adults that needed the most help! ( : Ms. Pesina was working with students in the MPR as they built out their preferred mascot selection with Play-Doh. Ms. Chen and Ms. Gonzales both supported the weaving of the metal puzzles. These proved to be the most challenging puzzles of the day! The Lego Bridge Building Contest provided the opportunity for students to showcase their creativity and it is clear we have a number of future engineers in our midst.

With Mr. Tyrrell grilling up hot dogs, portobello mushrooms, and pineapple, and all the puzzling stations, there were full bellies and smiling faces!

As we continue to build our community, we are grateful to our families and team members for coming together to make our campus truly one of a kind!

The kiddos looked pretty cool in their Jack Lewis Jr. purple sunglasses too!
World News
Our Hearts Are Broken
Words ring hollow at a time like this in our State and our Country. 21 beautiful souls and countless lives changed forever in unimageable ways.

The JLJ team spent this week reflecting on how we may be able to support those in Uvalde once the cameras and attention leaves the community and a new reality begins to set in. We are committed to serving, in some way, from one community to another. Further, we are committed to reflecting on this and taking action to ensure we have a secure campus. If you have not had a chance, please review the message regarding school security sent to families on Tuesday.

Our hearts are with Uvalde.
In Memoriam
This Memorial Day we wish to honor all of those brave men and woman who served, who sacrificed, and laid their lives down for the blessings of freedom. We mourn their loss this holiday weekend, but maintain a heart of gratitude for their service.

“This nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave.”- Elmer Davis

Mascot Madness!!
Mascots are important figures in a school community and we want our students to be a part of the selection process. Each week we will share different clues about potential mascots. We encourage our students to investigate and post their conclusion right here on Facebook.

Each right answer will be put into a bracket challenge called Mascot Madness (think March Madness) where students will vote on what they want their new school mascot to be.

We will unveil the winner during the first week of school!

"Rain or Shine, the Crew Continues On" Says Mr. Tyrrell
Letter from the editor
In a recent conversation with our Head of Operations, Mr. Tyrrell, he explained that despite the rain we have experienced in recent weeks, the crew continues to work day and night.

"There is no rest for the weary" said Mr. Tyrrell when describing the goals placed on the contractor. "The reality is that we have hundreds of excited students ready to see the school they will call home for years to come, and not opening on time is a non-starter."

Mr. Tyrrell is excited to report that the building construction remains on time, and we are already making our plans for our summer programs and teacher training in July!

Interested in a School Tour?

While we won't be in our new building until July, we wanted to offer school tours for interested families of our BASIS San Antonio Primary - Medical Center Campus. Our building will certainly be bigger and newer, however, as you likely know, all of our BASIS Texas Charter School campuses have a similar aesthetic both inside and out.

During the tours, we will discuss all things JLJ, as well as do a deeper dive into the BASIS Curriculum. We hope to see you there!
Want to Get Involved?
Each BASIS Campus has a Parent Booster Organization. This organization is led by parents to support the school in fundraising, volunteering at events, serving lunches, etc. This a critical feature of each BASIS Texas Charter School and would not be possible without the support of our amazing families!

Readiness Assessments
Readiness Assessments are assessments designed to identify present level performance for all "New to BASIS" students in grades 4th - 6th for Math and English Language Arts. These are not graded, are not entrance exams, and in no way affect a student's acceptance to JLJ. Simply put, our kiddos are coming from many different schools and in order to best prepare to fully implement the BASIS Curriculum, it is best to know where are incoming students are at!

Date & Time:
  • Saturday, June 11th - 9:00AM - 11:30AM
Location:
  • BASIS San Antonio Primary - Medical Center Campus
