As the 2025–26 academic year comes to a close, the Future U project continues to make major progress toward creating a reimagined University Student Union for future generations of Long Beach State students. This spring marked several exciting milestones across the construction site and surrounding campus spaces.
One of the most memorable moments of the semester was welcoming student government leaderes onto the site for a special Future U construction tour. Students had the opportunity to walk through areas of the former USU, learn more about the vision for the new facility, and see firsthand the scale of transformation taking place at the heart of campus. From demolition progress to future gathering spaces, the tour offered a glimpse into what student life at The Beach will look like in the years ahead.
Significant construction activity also continued throughout the spring semester, including the demolition of the former Nugget Grill & Pub, University Dining Plaza (UDP), and South Plaza areas. These changes mark another major step forward in preparing the site for the next phase of construction and redevelopment.
In addition, the new Friendship Walk stairs have officially been completed just in time for Commencement next week. The upgraded pathway improves accessibility and pedestrian flow through one of campus’s busiest corridors and represents one of the first visible completed enhancements connected to the Future U project. Check out photos of the completed stairs below.
As we head into summer, construction and site activity will continue across campus. Students, faculty, staff and alumni are encouraged to keep an eye out for future communications regarding major milestones, project progress and what to expect during the upcoming academic year as Future U continues to take shape.
Thank you for your continued patience, excitement and support as we build the future of student life at The Beach.
