Indianola's Dr. Katie Patterson Passes Away
We are saddened to report the passing of Katherine T. "Katie" Patterson, MD, FAAFP, of Indianola, MS. She passed away Sunday, September 4, due to complications from Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia, which she had only been diagnosed with ten days earlier. Obituary from Burton Funeral Home in Indianola.

Over the years, Dr. Patterson mentored medical students, family medicine residents, and undergraduates seeking admission to medical school, and her talents will be missed.

There was scarcely a position within the Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians that Dr. Patterson did not hold. An MAFP Past President (2017-18), she was currently one of two Mississippi delegates to AAFP Congress of Delegates, the current Advocacy Committee chair, and the current FamDocPAC chair.

Only weeks ago, Dr. Patterson was honored with the MAFP's John B. Howell Memorial Award, also known as the Family Physician of the Year award for 2022. The award is presented annually to the family physician contributing the most to the development of family medicine in Mississippi. It recognizes a physician who provides his or her community with compassionate and comprehensive medical service on a continuous basis. Dr. Patterson received this award on July 19 at the MAFP Annual Meeting in Sandestin, FL. She was one of the youngest individuals, and only the second female, to receive the award since its beginning in 1977.

The funeral will be held Saturday, Sept. 10, at 4 pm at the Indianola First United Methodist Church, or you may watch the livestream version on the Burton Funeral Home Facebook page.

In response to many inquiries from members asking how they can help, we have set up a Patterson Memorial Fund within our MAFP Foundation. We will decide at a later date how to best use the funds to honor Dr. Patterson's legacy. Click below to donate.

Like to Write? Enter Family Medicine Essay Contest With $1,000 Top Prize
The Center for the History of Family Medicine (CHFM) is sponsoring its annual essay contest for medical students and residents with a $1,000 top prize.

Possibilities are wide open – the scholarly essays must simply cover a topic relevant to family medicine history in the United States. That could be anything from a day-in-the-life of a family doctor to a medical-political controversy within family medicine.

The contest goal is two-fold: to encourage the next generation of family physicians to engage with the specialty’s history and then use the lessons learned to improve future health care. The author of the winning essay will receive $1,000 and the essay will be featured in a video at the AAFP Foundation’s 2023 National Conference. The second-place winner will receive a $500 award.

Only AAFP members are eligible to enter. Essays may be submitted online through Nov. 1, 2022.
