TCHS CAREER ACADEMY HELPING PREPARE LOCAL WORKFORCE
|
|
By BONNIE SAYLES
Tifton Grapevine
|
|
The
Tift College and Career Academy
at
Tift County High School
is ready to provide the
economic engine
that
Tift County
and the
surrounding area need
, Dr.
Tom Mark
told the
Tifton Rotary Club
on Wednesday.
“It’s not an academy in the true sense of the word. We are not a facility, a schoolhouse or building,” he explained.
“We are a
program within a program
, a
school within a school
. We
support
the
trades courses
at Tift County High School:
Career technical
and agricultural education
or CTAE.”
A relatively new system, the program is the brainchild of former Lt. Gov.
Casey Cagle
to
promote
the
trades
. After the downturn in economy in the past decade,
Georgia
experienced a
workforce deficit
.
Another trend,
Mark
said, is that a
number
of
young people
graduating high school go to
college
and find they’re
not prepared
for it, coming home with two years of college and about
$20,000
in
debt
. Lately, he said, there has been a more
serious push
toward the
trades
.
TCHS
received a
$3.14 million
grant for this program, combined with school improvement grants, so that the high school was able to add a couple of wings, enhance and upgrade the CTAE labs and bring ninth-grade students to the high school.
The
improvements
allow TCHS to
prepare
and
provide
the
workforce
for our community, he said.
“Wouldn’t it be great if everybody that graduated from
TCHS
went to work right here in
Tifton
? We want to
support local programs
that lead to
local hires
. We want our best and brightest to stay in Tifton. We want to grow our own help and prevent the ‘brain drain.’”
The
College and Career Academy
is entering its
third
year.
“We are still in our
infancy
,"
Mark
said. "We’re making progress and making
great strides
. We strive to make
Tift County
as
good as it can be
.”

ABAC STUDENTS GET USE OF HAY
AND FORAGE EQUIPMENT
|
|
Krone North America
recently loaned the
J.G. Woodroof Farm
at
Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College
several pieces of
hay and forage equipment
which will enable students to become acquainted with the modern tools of the trade in the hay production industry.
“The use of the four pieces of hay and forage harvest equipment will not only help our farm operations but will also provide our students the opportunity to see and use the latest innovations in
agricultural technology
in their courses and laboratories,” said Dr.
Mark J. Kistler
, dean of the
School of Agriculture & Natural Resources
.
Kistler said
Krone North America
has
loaned
the
ABAC farm
a Mower-Easy Cut Trailed Center (ECTC) 400 CV 2 point, Tedder-KW 782 T, Rake-SW 680 center delivery, and a Round Baler-Comprima V 180.
These pieces of
equipment
will help to
expand
ABAC students’
knowledge
of
hay production
and will give them
hands-on experiences
they will use once entering the industry.
"
ABAC
prepared me for a
career
in the
greatest industry
in America,” said
Grafton Rabun
, territory service manager at
Krone North America
and a
2012 ABAC graduate.
