Eberly Family Farm Receives DFA Dairy of Distinction Award
 From Dairy Farmers of America
Dairy Farmers of America’s (DFA) Members of Distinction program honors members who embody the Cooperative’s core values and excel on their operations, in their communities and in the industry. Each year, one member farm from each of DFA’s seven regional Areas is honored during the Annual Banquet at DFA’s Annual Meeting. This year's Southeast Area recipient is Eberly Family Farm in Waynesboro, Ga.

Eberly Family Farm in Waynesboro, Ga., may be a first-generation dairy, but the family sees dairy as an exciting and thriving industry, and is setting itself up to be part of the future of DFA. A 2014 transition from a pasture-based model to a conventional system helped the Eberly family maximize cow comfort, hygiene, management practices, and ultimately, milk quality. Now they’re passing on that spirit of careful attention to quality to the second generation — with the third not far behind . Full Story Here >>>

Uplifting quotes set the stage
By Caitlin Rodgers, GA Dairy Farmer, Hoard's Dairyman
Every week, one member of the Hillcrest Farms team will choose a quote to write on the whiteboard in our office for all to see. The quotes can range from Bible verses, inspirational quotes, or even just a thought. It can be anything that benefits the mindset of the farm crew. For instance, last week’s quote was, “There is no better example of faith than a man planting a seed in a field.”

There are some hard weeks on the farm throughout the year, that’s for sure. During those weeks, we feel like the days are never ending. It may be one thing after another: losing a member of the herd, equipment breaking down, getting called in to work several nights throughout the week . . . I could name hundreds of reasons.
Georgia Right to Farm Bill Delayed
From GA Agribusiness Council
HB 545 by House Ag Chairman Tom McCall, and Ag's largest priority issue for the session was unable to make it through the Senate this year, but remains available for consideration when we reconvene in 2020.

The Senate substitute, carried by Senate Ag Chairman  John Wilkinson , included amendments that attempted to address several concerns by a few rural Senators regarding specific issues that are ongoing in their districts. Now that session is over, our work will begin immediately to continue the discussion regarding the importance of Right to Farm legislation for Georgia farms and agribusinesses as opportunistic trial lawyers continue to “shop” nuisance cases around the state. These frivolous lawsuits have put farms out of business across the country and we need to close the loopholes in our Right to Farm laws to ensure that this does not take place in our state and force Georgia farmers out of the industry.

For over 40 years, the legislature has handled Ag nuisance laws differently than those in other industries and we want to make sure we maintain the original intent while closing some of the loopholes that have been exposed by changes in agriculture technology and updates to best practices on the farm.

The bill was supported by every major agriculture group in the state as well as support from the Georgia Chamber of Commerce as they made this lawsuit reform bill a score-card issue for legislators.  Governor Brian Kemp  also offered his support for this legislation.
