Message From Father Angi
In this age of dislocation, when people around the globe are on the move, fleeing violence, crushing poverty, and despair, the Feast of the Epiphany today presents us with another tale of a journey — a journey of faith and hope. Scripture tells us little about the travelers, these Magi from the East, who set out bearing gifts for a newborn king, based on their knowledge of prophecy and omens in the sky. The magi had a higher aim; they did not come to learn from a human king but to pay homage to a divine one. The Feast of Epiphany, this journey of the Magi, reminds us that the Spirit of God, who was breathed out over the waters at creation, continues to move among us to love, call, and enlighten all who are open to God’s presence. This Spirit moved the Magi to give away their material possessions as they searched for something more real, more profound. God’s Spirit is not confined to any individual, any people, any church building, no matter how magnificent. Notice, it is not King Herod, the scribes, or the temple priests of Israel who recognize or worship the newborn king, but outsiders, foreigners. If we shut our doors and our hearts to people of difference, like Herod or the infamous innkeepers of Bethlehem did, we might miss a chance to welcome bearers of God’s Spirit and God’s Word. We encounter a better role model in Mary of Nazareth, who welcomed these unfamiliar guests and their unusual gifts rather than turn them away. It is easy to imagine this humble woman “reflecting on” and “treasuring” this visit, as she did the night she received her first unexpected visitors, a band of impoverished shepherds from the hillsides near Bethlehem singing God’s praises and speaking of angels. This Feast encourages us to reflect on how we can be welcoming to all peoples in our family of parishes, our circle of friends, and in our hearts.
Sincerely,
Fr. Steve

Adult Help Wanted – for “Youthful” Volunteer Opportunities
Middle School Youth Ministry
We are re-launching the Middle School Youth Ministry programs with two groups: a 5th & 6th grade group and a 7th & 8th grade group. We need adults who have a passion for developing the faith and fellowship lives of these young people in a fun, supportive, and nurturing environment. We’re hoping to hold two meetings each month for each group.
High School Youth Ministry Leadership Team
We are looking to add to the current High School Youth Ministry leadership team. Alison Richert is the current Lead Coordinator for the HS Youth Ministry. For SafeParish reasons, and because the kids would benefit from a second “regular” minister, we’re looking for another “youthful” person who would enjoy partnering with her weekly. Ideally, we’re looking for a male so that any immediate personal issues can be handled appropriately. You can be someone who “just shows up ready to help” each week, or you can get involved in planning the weekly sessions.
Core Team Volunteers
If you’re looking for a more flexible option, we are also forming a Core Team for the Middle School and High School Youth Ministry groups. These teams will help advise on the structure of the program, as well as be available to assist from time to time with chaperoning events, leading activities, helping with marketing, etc.
If this sounds like something God may be calling you to, please reach out to Steve Von Hoene, the Associate Director of Youth Evangelization at stevevh@sggparish.org.
