Differences in Youth Substance Use

in Broward County

Did you know?

According to the Florida Youth Substance Abuse Survey (FYSAS), Black/African American students are more likely to report marijuana use compared to Hispanic and White students and White students are more likely to report drinking alcohol until blackout, compared to Black/African American and Hispanic students. Disparities in youth substance use such as these, highlight important areas for targeted intervention efforts, education, and prevention campaigns for specific sub-populations of Broward County students.

GA continues to deliver programming that is data-driven!

DEA’s National Prescription Drug

Take Back Day

Big thanks to volunteers and partners who joined us last Saturday to help collect

5 pounds of unwanted medication for proper disposal, preventing youth exposure to opioids and other drug-like medications. These efforts help to prevent youth exposure to opioids and other prescription drugs. We also thank Drug Enforcement Administration - DEA for their support in making our National Prescription Drug Take Back event a wide success!

GA Program Spotlight: COSP

Circle of Strength - Parenting (COSP) fosters a nurturing approach to parents using the evidence-based, Nurturing Parent Curriculum which offers families the opportunity to build stronger bonds.

Participants embark on a 12-week journey through weekly sessions that focus on building positive, healthy life skills to strengthen and empower their families. Families are rewarded throughout the program for various milestones. Upon completion of their journey, parents have reported improvement in their daily routines and work-life balance and developed approaches to aid in strengthening not only their familial unit but all other relationships.

“I really like the sessions because it helps me get closer to my kids after applying what I have learned throughout the weeks”. - J. Sanders

Correctional Adult Re-entry Education

Employment and Recidivism Reduction

Strategies (CAREERRS)’s Success Story

The story of Mr. Mitchell demonstrates the significance of collaborative partnership; that is, working with other organizations, and moreover, serving individuals whose steps are somehow ordered to the doors of Gang Alternative.

A collaborative partner referred Mr. Mitchell to GA's CAREERRS program, as he sought to rebuild his life and find a job. CAREERS equips participants who are justice-involved with vocational, employability and support services so that they can qualify for in-demand employment opportunities. Expressing a passion for and possessing over ten years’ experience in the building and construction trades sector, Mr. Mitchell found that returning to work after being incarcerated was challenging. Even still, he refused to give up. He knew work tools were needed to perform the job, and workplace behaviors were a must to demonstrate to an employer that he was indeed ready to work. The GA CAREERS team helped him to get work tools and, also expand his job readiness skills.

Focused on creating a career pathway, and a better quality of life, GA was able to equip Mr. Mitchell with the tools he needed to increase his preparedness for future opportunities. As a result, he secured a job as a Foreman with one of the largest construction sites in Miami and opportunities for career progression are already coming his way!

After being released for just 150 days, Mr. Mitchell shares that he feels his effort and commitment amount to 3 years of freedom. He’s now paying it forward by returning to GA and speaking to other program participants, encouraging them to  fully participate in GA’s programs because it changed his life, and to focus on their opportunities,  and get serious about preparing for the future.

We're so proud of you, Mr. Mitchell!
