Survival Skills for Social Work Training
On October 15th, GA staff convened for a Survival Skills for Social Work Training where we shared ways to balance hectic work/life schedules, and self-care tips.

In observation of Mental Health Awareness Month and World Mental Health Day, our COS and COS-CVAC program managers led a training session on how to support your own mental health journey in the modern-day work atmosphere and ways to help others along their journeys as well. The training helped to engage all staff present in a meaningful discussion of ways to care for themselves and others.

A few survival tools that were recommended by staff in the chat.
DEA Drug Take Back Day
On October 23rd, GA participated in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, a safe and convenient way to dispose of expired prescription drugs.
Big thanks to all participating venues in North Miami and Homestead, and volunteers/partners including South Dade One Voice Community Coalition, National Guard, and the Miami Police Department that helped make the DEA Drug Take Back event a success.
With your help, we were able to help keep youth safe from opioids and other drug-like medications.
EFFECT
The Encouraging Full Female Engagement in Construction Training (EFFECT) program started its second cohort for the NCCER Core Construction Training.
A total of 18 women started the program, which is offered in-person and virtually.

For more information on this program, contact the EFFECT program manager, Edward Hudson at ehudson@myga.org.

Give Miami Day (GMD)
November 15th- 18th

The annual giving event unites nonprofits to celebrate and increase generosity in Greater Miami through online giving that occurs during a 24 hour period.
We are reaching out to our clients and youth participants to learn how
Gang Alternative, Inc. has impacted them. The following is a testimonial from Lizette, a participant from GA's EFFECT program:
“I was referred to EFFECT by my Case Worker at SunServ. At the time, I was homeless, I did not have my High School diploma, and was having difficulty finding a job. After meeting with EFFECT’s staff, they introduced me to Project RENEW Broward and I was enrolled in both programs.
Since joining EFFECT and RENEW, I’ve earned my certificate of completion in basic construction, OHSA 10, and CPR and First Aid.
I now have stable housing, I am working toward my GED and I have a more positive outlook on life and what I can accomplish.
They were also able to help me with transportation and food assistance. Gang Alternative, Inc. has been supportive and I am very grateful for the services.”
