March GABA Meeting
Thursday, March 13, 2025 at 7pm
Location: Catalina United Methodist Church
2700 E. Speedway Blvd, Room H230
Tucson, AZ 85716
Topic: Bicycling Across Southeast Asia
At our March meeting, Don Erickson will share his adventures of cycling through Southeast Asia.
In 2024, Don recruited 9 other riders to join him on this 2 ½ month self-organized and self-supported tour of Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand.
The route started in Hanoi and continued down the length of Vietnam, across Cambodia, and along the SE coast of Thailand. Experience the bustling cities of Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Phnom Penh and Bangkok; Buddhist temples and Vietnamese war memorials; Angkor Wat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; colorful street markets and tasty cuisine; and the wonderful people encountered along the way.
Meetings are held in the H230 conference room at the Catalina United Methodist Church at 2700 E Speedway Blvd (southwest corner of Speedway and Treat). Parking is directly across from the church in their parking lot on the other side of Treat Ave.
You can come a little early and socialize with other GABA members. And, non-member guests are welcome
Finally, if you or anyone you know might have some bicycling adventures to share at future GABA meetings, please contact the program coordinator:
Barry Weiss at bdweiss@arizona.edu.

1st GABA Annual Lunch Ride
GABA hosted the First Annual Lunch After a Group Ride on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at Brandi Fenton Memorial Park. The event was a big success thanks to the ride leaders, all the volunteers at the venue, and all the ride participants. There were approximately 130 attendees.
The Group Rides started from multiple locations around Tucson and arrived at the park for a social gathering and lunch.
The menu included hamburgers, hot dogs, veggie burgers, baked beans, potato salad, macaroni salad, green salad, chips, and a selection of desserts.
The event coordinators realized there were a few shortcomings which will be addressed prior to next year’s event. If you would like to send us your comments about the event, please email us at luncheon@bikegaba.org

Road Pavement and Preservation Program
On Thursday, February 27, through Wednesday, March 12, 2025, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Pima County Department of Transportation and its contractor, Sunland Asphalt & Construction, LLC, will be performing road work as part of Pima County’s Road Pavement Repair and Preservation Program at the following locations:
- Hacienda del Sol from Camino Pablo to River Road
- Pontatoc Road from San Simeon Road to River Road
- Dodge Boulevard from Kleindale Road to River Road
- River Road from Pontatoc Road to Swan Road
The work will consist of setting traffic control, milling, crack sealing, and temporary pavement marking. Paving and final pavement marking will follow at a later date.
Due to the project area limitations, turn movements within the work zones may be restricted. Minor delays and lane closures may also occur. Please approach the areas with caution, obey all traffic control devices and allow for extra travel time.
In the event of mechanical failure or inclement weather, the construction schedule is subject to change.
In Fiscal Year 2024/2025, the Pima County Board of Supervisors and Transportation Department allocated $24 million in road repair and preservation funding for the Road Pavement Repair and Preservation Program. Announcing a new GABA members-only Strava club
We have learned that GABA members would like a members-only Strava club. Rather than close the existing GABA official Strava club off from public participation (because it allows GABA to promote its existence in the community), the board has created a second, closed Strava club that is available to GABA members only.
To join the new Greater Arizona Bicycling Association (GABA) (Members Only) Strava club, login to Strava and go to:
www.strava.com/clubs/gaba-membersonly
and click on the button labeled “Request to join”.
If your GABA membership is current, an administrator will approve your request to join.
