Dear Members & Friends of GABC,
It is really amazing, but with Labor Day already passed, the summer is in its last days, officially ending September 21st. As usual it seems like the hot season was too short, but it also means that the GABC is now back from the break.
Shortly before our break the yearly board member election took place. I would like to thank all of the board members for putting their time and efforts into the GABC. Thank you very much ! (More details see below)
Also the newly elected board has a lot of great events lined up for you. Specifically I would like to point out our Oktoberfest event taking place on Sept 27th at Jacob Wirth, a fun socializing event which is by now a GABC tradition - "O’zapft is !".
In addition I would like to remind that we would like to get more active participation. Specifically from our Sponsors and Corporate Members in regards to news for our section “Schwarzes Brett”. We did not receive a lot over this summer, but it is time now to start and to provide us with your input.
And one reminder:
- Did you already book your Corporate Table for the upcoming GALA for December 9th? For the first time we will have the GALA not during the week, but on Friday the 9th of December. So if you did not book your table yet, please start doing so right away.
I wish all of you a good start in the fall season and I hope you enjoy reading the newsletter.
Alles Gute,
Michael

Behind the Scenes
On June 29, 2016 the GABC Board of Directors met for their monthly meeting in the offices of Deloitte to vote for Board Member positions-- as they do every summer. Executive Director Marian LeMay was thrilled that each existing board member elected to continue their volunteer service on the board, roles that, however rewarding, take up significant time in the lives of these busy executives.
In addition, four existing board members were nominated for, and subsequently voted in for officer positions. The current slate of board Members is as follows:

GABC
: Ines, what's your connection with German-American business?
IB: Having moved to Boston in 2015 in order to pursue new career opportunities, without the security of employment, or the support of an employer’s expertise, I had to create and develop my own professional- as well as personal network.
GABC: What do you like about the GABC?
IB: GABC was of remarkable assistance, inviting me to networking events, referring me to established company contacts, and providing me with regular updates about upcoming events or possible job opportunities. Whatever question arose in the process of adjusting to the Boston speed of life, GABC always took the time to send a fast and competent response! When looking back at the first few months of hard work to find my way in this competitive environment, I realize how much GABC’s encouragement and wealth of knowledge has contributed to later success.
GABC: What are you looking forward to seeing the GABC do in the future?
IB: As GABC has started doing, involve the younger generation, prepare them for the corporate and personal changes that will show their effects once they reach what is considered today, the “baby-boomer” age.
GABC: What keeps you busy when you're not working?
IB: What I started doing as a high school student in Germany, and then continued for almost twenty years until I accepted a job offer from an engineering firm in Chicago: Go flying!
GABC: Tell us something about yourself that we wouldn't know by looking at your CV.
IB: I love to write about women with unusual biographies, interests and exemplary persistence. Here in Boston, I have quickly come up with a long list of such extraordinary individuals whose lives I would love to share in form of a book, once I have-, or take the time to write it. I enjoy sharing my own personal experiences as a world traveler, technical professional (Metallflugzeugbauer), as well as a single parent, - criteria that tend to expose women to a lot of challenges worth discussing fearlessly. Meanwhile, I am well connected, and hope to give back to this amazing city what it has made possible for me.

The most pressing things discussed were:
1) Mentorship: Most YP see it as most valuable to have a Mentor with whom they can discuss future career perspectives. Options discussed: a) a pool of mentors tailored to the needs of each Mentee available for advice/expertise when needed or b) a close one-on-one relationship. More...
