Greetings from the President Claudio Riedi
A Word From The President

Come to our Events.

Wikipedia defines “International Business” as “the trade of goods, services, technology, capital and/or knowledge across national borders and at a global or transnational scale.”

There are two macro-scale factors that underline the trend of greater globalization. The first consists of eliminating barriers to make cross-border trade easier (e.g. free flow of goods and services, and capital, referred to as "free trade"). The second is technological change, particularly developments in communication, information processing, and transportation technologies.

The German American Business Chamber has been a strong proponent of both ingredients of international business. We have advocate for the free flow of goods and reduction of barriers to market entry. For example, during the covid-shutdown, we advocated against the border closings towards the Schengenraum, now just a distant memory.

The GABC has also been on the forefront of technological change, and inventions in communications. Just ten or 15 years ago, it would have been unthinkable for this newsletter to appear in your email in-box six times of the year. Zoom-seminars, and board meetings online would have been considered science fiction. Today, they are reality. Even a Stammtisch or happy hours these days are sometimes online – for better or for worse.

In the future, the GABC will be attentive to changes in technology, and will integrate them as soon as possible into our business model. However, until we get to the future, we will mix virtual and in-person events whenever possible.

In the coming months, we will have in-person meetings at client’s facilities, such as the space-age spa Figurella Women’s Fitness, our newest member (April 14). We will have a roundtable discussion on the pros-and-cons of renting versus buying real estate, which is planned as both an in-person and virtual event (April 21). Seminars on blockchain financial transactions with the other European chambers (April 27th) and on personal injury lawsuits (May 13, 2022) will also be in person, but recorded for later access online.

As an international trade organization, we are doing our part to foster business with Germany and German companies, and hope you will be part of it all.

Karoline Smit from Elewa:

"I am a RN and medical aesthetician from Germany. During my work I was always searching for the ´perfect´ skin care product. Traveling South Africa in 2013, I got in contact with African oils and realized they provide everything a perfect skincare product needs. Back in Miami, I started to create my own oil blends and a year later in December 2014 the first products where manufactured. The beginning of ELEWA. The beginning of a very exiting journey.

But ELEWA is not only about skin care products. It´s a concept. Nature – body -mind – spirit in balance. I realized that Nature has all the answers to our questions, we just have to listen.

I enrolled in courses at Yogananda Institute in California to become a holistic health practitioner and earned a Bachelor degree in spiritual healing in 2015. I´m very thankful for everything I learned. It changed my life forever.

My partners Namib Desert Oils in Germany and Jojoba for Namibia Trust in Namibia are constantly working on interesting new Products.

In the Brochure you will find information about the philosophy of my company and the ELEWA skin care line.

The products are available in the US and the European Union. They are manufactured in the US and in Germany."

Johannes W. Vieweg, M.D.

Dr. Johannes Vieweg has a distinguished 25-year career in academic medicine and higher education. As the first in his family to achieve a college degree, he is passionate about improving educational and healthcare access for all, developing cutting-edge innovations, and driving data-driven system change. Since 2016, he has served as the Founding Dean and Chief Academic Officer of Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine. The new College has received national attention through its innovative, case-based, system-sequenced curriculum and through a unique business model utilizing deliberate cost reductions and re-investments to constantly refine program quality, thus increasing the overall value of the medical school in lockstep with university goals.

Dr. Vieweg started his career as faculty member at Duke University in 1998, rising from Instructor to Associate Professor with tenure, to Vice Chair of Research in the Duke Department of Urology. At Duke, much of his scientific activities have centered on developing cell- and gene-based active immunotherapy approaches in a team science setting. Contributions included the discovery and clinical testing of genetically engineered dendritic cells, the evaluation of universal tumor antigens, the modulation of regulatory T cells and myeloid cells. This work established the foundation for a highly productive NIH-funded clinical trial pipeline conducted through FDAapproved investigator-sponsored new drug applications.

In 2006, he joined the University of Florida (UF), a land grant public university system, as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Urology. Dr. Vieweg’s recruitment was facilitated by the Florida Board of Governors’ 21st Century World Class Scholar’s program, which recognizes nationally distinguished faculty in biomedical research. Other positions held by Dr. Vieweg during his 10-year tenure at UF included: The Wayne & Marti Huizenga Endowed Research Scholar Chair, Executive Director of the UF Prostate Disease Center, Chairman of the Florida Prostate Cancer Advisory Council and Vice President of the UF Clinical Practice Association.

In 2015, Dr. Vieweg was awarded a prestigious Jefferson Science Fellowship by the National Academy of Sciences. This program engages distinguished scientists from across the U.S. as Special Advisors to the U.S. Department of State to provide scientific expertise in foreign policy development. In this position, Dr. Vieweg frequently participated in diplomatic meetings with foreign governments to advance partnerships and implement foreign policy for the United States of America. Dr. Vieweg is an active member of his community, serving on multiple boards and commissions, including the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance, the Broward Medical Association, the Florida Association of Medical Schools Deans, and the American/ Florida Medical Associations.

In line with his lifelong commitment to gender, equity, diversity, and inclusion, he has a strong focus on developing diverse talent pipelines through affiliations with either regional or historically black colleges and universities to enable pathways into the health professions. In 2019, he received the American Medical Women’s Association’s Dr. Larry Zaroff Man of Good Conscience Award, for promoting women's careers in science and medicine.

Dr. Vieweg received his MD degree from the Technical University of Munich/Germany following the completion of a thesis focused on myocardial phosphodiesterase-III blockade in patients with chronic heart failure.

For 70 years, Goethe-Institut and its multiple offspring have been promoting knowledge of the German language abroad and fostering international cultural cooperation. In the Southeast of the U.S., this task is being taken on by Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta. With its headquarters in Georgia, Goethe-Zentrum is more and more active in all the states of the Southeast.

This Friday, April 1st, Goethe will bring the work of German climate photographer Barbara Dombrowski to Miami.

In cooperation with the United Church Coral Gables, and the German Consulate General, Goethe presents Dombrowski’s Tropic Ice, a visual and audio celebration of the lives of indigenous people in five continents, to enable a dialog between cultures affected by climate change. Dombrowski’s breathtaking images – fruit of ten years of work – are being set to Ludwig van Beethoven’s sixth symphony, the Pastoral, a celebration of nature and the seasons. This event will take place under the stars, if the weather permits, or indoors. For all ages and the whole family, accompanied by a reception.

“The tropical city of Miami knows what it means to be affected by man-made climate change. An art project like Barbara Dombrowski’s photo, video, and music project Tropic Ice is one way to help connect this experience with the experience of people all around the world. It is at the center of Goethe-Zentrum’s mission to bring people from different backgrounds into conversation, debate, discussion. One could say, that’s a very Miami thing, isn’t it?”, said Goethe Executive Director Oliver Gorf.

Goethe hasn’t had much of a presence in Miami or Florida so far. But Oliver Gorf, a former 10-year resident of Miami himself, wants to change that. This is already the third event in 12 months involving Miami. Last may they invited artists from Miami to discuss the healing powers of art in the face of trauma, for the anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall, Goethe supported the staging of the play “Ich bin ein Berliner” by the Miami-based Cuban-American playwright Vanessa Garcia in Miami. And now comes Tropic Ice meets Pastoral.

In a meeting with GABC, Goethe emphasized that they are interested in working with the German-American business community in South Florida, be it as language course provider or collaborator. We believe that an important component of a healthy business environment is a vivid cultural life, and the transatlantic dialog”, said Oliver Gorf.
