A Word From The President

One of the greatest changes in South Florida over the last few decades is the transformation from a city of the future to a world city of the present. Real, persistent growth has replaced mere promise of growth. In the 1980s, Summers in Miami were sleepy, and few Miamians braved the heat. Most preferred ty travel to cooler climates. Accordingly, business organizations rarely programmed events for the Summer, out of concern over lack of participation. No more. 

Today, Miami is open for business 365 days of the year. There is no noticeable dip in business activity in today’s Miami in the heat of the Summer. Service professionals in the past could easily take a few months off and head home (to Germany), but in today’s Miami, business never sleeps.

Today’s newsletter features events that occurred in the past few weeks, and will tease events coming up this Summer. We at the GABC will be here all Summer long to connect you, and to bring the German-oriented business community together. Read in this issue who our new members are, and find yourself on our events pages… if you participated in the events.

With the economy humming along year-round, one of the challenges all business owners contend with is finding qualified staff, particularly bi-lingual or tri-lingual qualified staff. The GABC can help. This newsletter as always will be read by thousands, and you should consider a job-ad in our next issue if you need qualified German-speaking employees. Just as our new member DRRT does in this issue, you, too can take advantage of our network in the German business community to find that unicorn of an employee you need. Our members and readers are perhaps the most finely segmented audience you can target for a job-ad, and our rates are very reasonable.

My family and I moved from Germany to the US to accommodate a new career opportunity for my husband Kevin, who works in the gaming industry and had the chance to return to the US where he was born and raised. We have a 3-year young daughter, Hanna, who now enjoys the Floridian sun. I was born and raised near Dresden but lived in Berlin for the past 10 years after working in Switzerland and Spain before that. I recently received my Greencard and am more than excited to continue my professional career in the US.
 
My background is in the luxury hospitality industry. I am a passionate Sales & Marketing leader with 20 years of experience. I would describe myself as a compassionate, loyal, reliable and focused individual who strives for success of the team and the company.

For 70 years, Goethe-Institut and its multiple offspring have been promoting knowledge of the German language abroad and fostering international cultural cooperation. In the Southeast of the U.S., this task is being taken on by Goethe-Zentrum Atlanta. With its headquarters in Georgia, Goethe-Zentrum is more and more active in all the states of the Southeast. 

Goethe hasn’t had much of a presence in Miami or Florida so far. But Oliver Gorf, a former 10-year resident of Miami himself, wants to change that. They already hosted three events in 12 months involving Miami. Last May they invited artists from Miami to discuss the healing powers of art in the face of trauma, for the anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall, Goethe supported the staging of the play “Ich bin ein Berliner” by the Miami-based Cuban-American playwright Vanessa Garcia in Miami. And now comes Tropic Ice meets Pastoral. 

In a meeting with GABC, Goethe emphasized that they are interested in working with the German-American business community in South Florida, be it as language course provider or collaborator. We believe that an important component of a healthy business environment is a vivid cultural life, and the transatlantic dialog”, said Oliver Gorf.
