Greetings from the President
|
|
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US
This is the 30
th
Anniversary Edition of the GABC Newsletter.
This means that an organization founded based on nothing more than a joint sense of destiny of several Miami businesspeople in 1988 has endured and prospered – which in itself is remarkable. I have seen dozens of similar organizations come and go in over time, and I have witnessed the ups and downs of the GABC itself first hand. The fact that we are stronger than ever today – at a spry 30 – speaks for itself.
In the dusty archives of the GABC, former Executive Director Gisela Carreras found a statement celebrating the GABC’s 10
th
Anniversary in 1998. I encourage you to read the entire 10
th
anniversary statement of the GABC
here
.
The statement is remarkable because it reminds us of how far we have come, and how many great friends and colleagues have applied themselves to make this organization a success.
I further urge you to enjoy the photos from the early years we found in Director Peter Jacob’ vault (see photos in the article "30 years GABC" below)
, which show us that the German Business Community in Miami has been relevant for decades, even though fashions change. And while Franz Josef Strauss famously said that “Deutschland braucht Bayern,” Deutschland “braucht auch Organisationen wie die GABC.”
But more importantly, the 1998 statement reminded me of our founders, Nick Friedman, Thomas Baur (who passed away in December), and of former presidents Christa Green, Walt Loy, and Michael Claus, who created and formed the organization we see today.
Those present at our 30
th
Anniversary Gala at the fantastic Miele Experience Showroom in Coral Gables on May 30, 2018 know that the quality of our members, and the vigor of the organization is undiminished today. See the photos from the event
here
.
Viewing all these artifacts – past and present – we realize that this organization does not just connect the German-oriented business people today, but it connects us over time. By joining the GABC, our members become part of a fabric that has been woven for 30 years. And while it may not always be clear why we go to this meeting, or that business card exchange, why we put on that seminar or read this newsletter today, when we look back over three decades of GABC, we see that this organization has united us and has enriched our professional and personal lives.
Enjoy this newsletter, and those coming in the next 30 years, and do not forget to send us your contributions early and often.

Thank You to Dr. Anja Hessert
I would like to express a heart-felt “Thank You” to Dr. Anja Hessert, who recently resigned from the board of directors to pursue new professional opportunities that will demand her full attention.
Over the past few years, Anja has become invaluable to the GABC, putting some teeth into the GABC’s plans to establish a stronger presence in Fort Lauderdale and parts “north of the Wall.” Well connected and eager to contribute to the growth of the GABC, Anja has made a lasting impact on this organization. She pursued a closer cooperation of the GABC with the Broward Alliance and other Lauderdale-centric organizations, and in the process became the face of our organization in Broward. We intend to pursue her vision of regular events for the GABC in Broward, and wish her all the best. She promised to stay a member of the organization, and we expect (and hope) to see her often at our events.

The German-American School PTO (Parents Teacher Organization) was hosting its annual Summer & End Of the Year Party on May 5, 2018 at CB Smith Park in Pembroke Pines!
Children, parents and teachers got together to celebrate another successful school year. It was a "World Cup" party and adults joined a soccer match happening as well. Everybody enjoyed a German afternoon with performances, games and great food. Groups of children were performing a play and presenting some songs and poems.
It was a great family event, excellent organized by the PTO.
