SPECIAL RECOGNITION AND THANK YOU
The new GABC webpage would not have been possible without the endless support of our Trustee Member, advertising and marketing company, MAX FIELDS Communication Agency. Michael Seraphin, owner of MAX FIELDS, is also a member of the GABC Board of Directors. Michael has assigned the design of the new GABC webpage as well as the development of a new Corporate Design and Corporate Identity to the MAX FIELDS innovative Design Team, superheaded by Heather Bond.
Heather and her team worked out all the kinks, squashed numerous bugs and tirelessly advised the GABC team.
We hope you enjoy the new look and ease of use of our webpage!

Greetings from the President
|

Tariffs … Nein Danke.
At the risk of offending some, I will wax politic, for once.
When the GABC was formed decades ago, it was called the German American Trade Council, or GATC for short. Some of our more seasoned members still refer to us as the GATC – with good reason. Promoting bi-lateral trade between the United State and Germany remains a prime objective of our organization.
Germany was one of Florida’s most important trade partner in 2017 (according to Enterprise Florida), primarily for aircraft, aircraft parts, cars, medical instruments, and machine parts. Most of them contain steel and aluminum. Both US and German companies benefit from free flow of commerce in-and outbound.
Neither Florida nor Germany will benefit if tariff barriers are erected between the US and its allies. Anyone who studied US history will know what happened when the United States passed the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act in 1930. It deepened and prolonged the Great Depression, and caused untold disruption of international markets. In short: Tariffs hurt the US way more than they helped. You’d think a lesson earned is a lesson learned.
In this case, the tariffs recently proposed for steel and aluminum imports would benefit a few US companies and about 35,000 US workers in the US steel and aluminum industries. I dare say that the tariffs would not benefit any Florida companies or individuals, except for those who own stocks in these industries. They would hurt untold US and German companies, and would be to the detriment of millions, including most Floridians.
This is not about partisan politics. The Republican Congress is largely opposed to these trade barriers. I encourage all our members to read up and reflect on these issues, and to make their voices heard. These are issues of great importance, issues that will define this generation, as either moving forward or falling backwards.
As the President of the GABC I intend to encourage discourse, and to consider various points of view, but ultimately, I will push our organization to advocate for a reduction in trade barriers, and for a free flow of goods across national borders. I believe that taking such a stance is in accordance with the mandate of this organization, but I welcome other points of view (hint: the GABC newsletter accepts letters to the editor and may even print them in later newsletters).
So: stand up and be heard.

THE GERMAN AMERICAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
OF SOUTH FLORIDA:
A PERSPECTIVE
|
|
Spring 1988. Five business executives in Miami, Florida, were discussing whether, when and how to break away from a German American group in North Miami and establish a similar institution more business-oriented. The one “to the North” resembled a
Schuplattler culture –
a “Social Club”.
Many more meetings ensued. The decision was not easy but necessary to advance German American commercial relations. On one point there was agreement: No new organization could function effectively without a full-time Executive Director (ED) and her detailed responsibilities therewith.
Finally, in June 1988 the German American Trade Council was founded and the By-laws adopted on March 22, 1990. Initial officers consisted of a President, Vice President, two Secretaries and a Treasurer. The ED had also been hired. A Board of Directors did not yet exist. Membership was virtually nil. Seven purposes of the organization were clearly spelled out. Abbreviated herewith, they are just as relevant today –- possibly expressed in more distinctive words –- as 30 years ago:
Foster peace and understanding between individuals and institutions worldwide. Promote trade, commerce, and facilitate investors’ goals, especially between the USA/Florida and Germany. Provide links and educational opportunities of German-speaking nations. Solicit individual memberships to finance the above ideals on a non-profit basis.
To stimulate the above objectives, in addition to small networking sessions, one major avenue was to invite prominent guest speakers from abroad as well as nearby. On most occasions international or bilateral topics were pursued which also served as a platform to recruit new members. No easy task.
In order to unify two other German American associations in Florida, one in Orlando the other in Tampa Bay -– each one with a different name yet same objectives -– a merger took place on March 1, 2000, under the auspices of the German American Business Chamber of Florida. Purpose: To integrate existing and future Florida organizations under one umbrella and achieve uniformity of goals.
It was a lofty ambition but for numerous reasons, primarily because of Florida’s size, not workable. Miami had always been the major German American business hub, largely because of its commercial and related infra structure – including adjacent Fort Lauderdale – and most likely will remain so.
In the GABC’s 30 years existence, irrespective by whatever name, five Presidents were at the helm (including one today). Together with their Executive Directors, all-volunteer Board of Directors and on a rotating basis interns from Germany, they took pain to heed the organization’s mission statements. Worrisome almost consistently was the struggle to increase or retain membership. (Other bilateral organizations and customer service oriented businesses fared no better).
The world of 30 years ago has changed. So have aspects of the GABC. The German American Business Chamber of South Florida –- in association with the German American Chamber of Commerce in Atlanta –- should have a welcome future: New ideas and young blood have joined the GABC Board and it will be interesting to observe how their concepts are meshed with older and more experienced helmsmen. I firmly believe that the current leadership of the GABC is in the best of hands.

Christa Green Moves on to Bigger and Better Things
|
|
In a year of significant changes on the Board of Directors and leadership of the GABC, one of the losses felt most deeply is the end of Christa Green’s tenure on the Board.
Christa Green has been a stalwart of our organization for nearly three decades, and has led the GABC (initially the GATC) for many years as President in the 1990s. She has been on the Board of Directors during all this time and has been a tireless contributor to all things GABC.
A banker by trade, Christa has had an illustrious career with many known banks, including Credit Suisse and Northern Trust, among others. A person of sharp wit and fine humor, with boundless positive energy, Christa has carried her load on the Board at all times. The number of events Christa organized or contributed to are too numerous to list. She will be sorely missed.
In her retirement, Christa has moved to Sarasota, where life is more leisurely, and the sun shines more brightly. She promised she will visit the East Coast frequently, and we hope she will attend our functions while she is here.
On a personal note, Christa has become a good friend to me and to other Directors, as well as to some members. And while it is always sad to see a friend move away, we intend to draw on her vast business experience, and call on her when we need her. I encourage all our members to do likewise. You can reach her at
[email protected]

TIMURA- beautifully diverse - the products made in germany from innovatively refined wood.
THERMO WOOD: PATENTED TECHNOLOGY FROM TIMURA
Production methods – thermal processing at the highest level
Timura’s thermo wood is thermally refined using our
patented
vacuum-press drying method (Vacu³). During the Vacu³ process native tree species such as ash, poplar and oak are thermally modified, just as they are by other thermo wood manufacturers. In our case, however, the modification is carried out in a vacuum chamber, and the heat transfer happens between the individual layers of wood (contact heat) with added mechanical pressure (70 tons). Unlike other thermal processes, our technology is faster and more efficient because the wood itself is heated, not the system. As the heat is transferred via heating plates, we can also guarantee a uniform treatment and homogenous staining on all our work pieces.
