This Sunday, from 10-4pm, we are opening our doors! In conjunction with Historic Milwaukee, Doors Open offers us the annual opportunity to further connect Grand Avenue Club's purposeful, working community with the public as well as celebrate the unique history of our building!
"Built in 1856, the Bank of Milwaukee Building, home of Milwaukee's Grand Avenue Club, incorporates the oldest commercial building in the city. For many years it was known as the Insurance Exchange Building which reflected over a half century of occupancy by the Christian Schroeder and Son Insurance Company (1913-1968). The building, besides many tenants, has housed a bank, an insurance company, the Marine Bank credit card department, and an architectural firm.
It’s most recent and current tenant is the Grand Avenue Club! GAC is a nonprofit dedicated to serving adults in Milwaukee county who experience mental illness. GAC follows the International “Clubhouse Model” which is a nonclinical model devoted to members and staff working together to achieve organizational and individual goals.
The programmatic emphasis is education, employment and enrichment, all of which you will see during the tour." - Historic Milwaukee, Inc.
Visitors can expect to see our 3rd Floor, Employment and Education Unit; 2nd Floor, Culinary (and enrichment) Unit; 1st Floor, Retail Unit, Basement, home to GAC's upscale resale Water St. Boutique!
The member and staff led tour will consist a closer look at the building’s past, present, and future and will take approximately 15 minutes.
