Since June 1, 2020, when Grand Avenue Club re-opened its doors to colleagues--members and staff--we have been very careful about social distancing, mask wearing, etc. We are still being careful, but we are also slowly moving back to the full range of evening, weekend, holiday and "end of day" activities that were available before the pandemic. These include opportunities for members to exercise. We have a work out room, sponsor a daily walk every lunch hour, and are looking forward to our annual trip to Blue Lotus Farm & Retreat Center where we swim, kayak, go fishing, play sports, and go hiking.
Four weeks ago Yari Colby came to GAC for the first time to do her Occupational Therapy
Assistant Field Placement, a requirement of her MATC program. She came upon our work-out room and a white board announcing a program called "Workout Buddies," a session of motivational group exercises for colleagues that was initiated by Abigail Stein, GAC's Office Administrator.
As Yari and Abigail chatted, they discovered that they grew up in the same neighborhood in West Los Angeles and that both were devotees of all aspects of fitness, including dance fitness, such as Zumba. From this realization, a GAC opportunity was born.
Starting tomorrow, Friday, April 16, these two Angelinas will be leading the very first Zumba class at GAC! Colleagues are looking forward to this new class.
Abigail comments, "We're excited too. We are geared up and ready to go. We're hopeful that there will be a good turnout and we are prepared to create modifications if they are needed by any colleague so that everyone gets the benefit of Zumba."
Yari says, " With Zumba you are not exercising. Your experience is similar to dancing at a party, but you get the benefits of a work out. I love it."
Abigail's and Yari's excitement has caught on! Many of us are anticipating a good first session and many sessions after that. We look forward to learning from Yari and Abigail and getting the benefits of Zumba that they have been experiencing for years!
