Opening Plenary: The Heroic Journey of Addiction Recovery

presented by Dr. Michael Cowl Gordon, MD, FASAM

The course presents a new framework for addiction recovery--that of the heroic journey. The mythic heroic journey was described by Joseph Campbell, a philosopher and educator as a model of challenge in life. The course begins with an introduction explaining how this idea presented itself to me during the course of my addiction medicine practice. Storytelling is a powerful method of teaching, and will be utilized in the program as examples of the stages of the heroic journey are discussed.

Pharmacy of the Streets

presented by Dr. Merrill Norton, PharmD, DPh, CMAC, CCS

The adverse effects of illicit drug use have been well-documented. Methamphetamines destroy your teeth, cocaine can cause convulsions, and smoking marijuana irritates the respiratory tract. These short-term consequences pale in comparison, though, to the ultimate price that drug users often pay — a life that’s cut short by substance misuse. Indeed, there is an inversely proportional relationship between drug use and life expectancy, proving that recovery is often a matter of life and death.

Saturday Lunch Plenary: Kidnapped

presented by Terry Wynne, Ed.S., LPC, NCC, NCCC, BCC, CCC

Terry L. Wynne will share her true story of being kidnapped by a person struggling with drug addiction in hopes her story will inspire your own work. She invites you to listen to the details of her ordeal and ultimately ask yourself what meaning her experience has for you and your work.

Building a Supervisory Alliance

presented by Dr. Patricia Brown, PhD, CCS, MAC, CACII

Clinical supervision takes place in the context of the supervisor–supervisee relationship. A positive supervisory alliance includes mutual understanding of the goals and tasks of supervision and a strong professional bond between supervisor and supervisee. To be effective, a supervisor must have a clear understanding of the nature and dynamics of this relationship. (TAP 21-A). Over the course of psychotherapy supervision history, the supervisor-supervisee alliance has increasingly emerged as a variable of preeminent importance in the conceptualization and conduct of the supervision experience: It has come to be embraced as the very heart and soul of supervision (Watkins,2018). This course will highlight the unique relationship between the supervisor and the supervisee and the value of building a supervisory working alliance.
