GACC NY Provides Insight on Germany-US Trade Status at IHK Business Forum in Hanover
The German Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) last month hosted a round table discussion in Hanover, Germany, on the current state of US-German trade.

This forum, led by IHK Foreign Trade Expert Tilmann Brunner, specifically highlighted how companies based in Lower Saxony with business in the US are being impacted. Participants included local business leaders as well as experts on the US and German economies. Brunner pointed out that a similar gathering took place 10 years ago.

Dietmar Rieg of the GACC NY provided a GACC perspective on the US business climate. He said the American economy primarily has remained strong over the last year, and added that the GACC continues to facilitate the solid business relations between Germany and the US. Rieg highlighted partnerships with US companies and educational institutions to support apprenticeship programs in the US as a prime example of effective US-Germany collaboration.

GACC NY Speaks to Students About Apprenticeship Opportunities in Advanced Manufacturing
Driving through the rolling hills of rural Sussex New Jersey, GACC NY representatives Matthew Allen and Alexandra Hoffmann (pictured standing on left) made their way to High Point Regional High School. The school, located amidst vast farmland, is home to two CNC machines and an outstanding curriculum surrounding them.

Students at High Point have a knack for building things. Surrounded by various unique projects, Matthew and Alexandra took part in a team building exercise that explained the process of learning a skill. This technique was an engaging way to enrich the students minds on how “learning by doing” is one of the best ways to learn a skill. The exercise correlated with apprenticeship and how apprentices learn advanced skills through hands-on experience.

GACC NY Guides Connecticut's Goodwin College College in High Tech Workforce Development
The GACC NY is partnering with Goodwin College in East Hartford to construct the first ever dual track training program in “ Mechatronics ” based on the vocational guidelines in Germany. Goodwin’s architect of this curriculum is Dr. Cliff Thermer, Department Chair for Business, Management and Advanced Manufacturing.

As word has spread about this workforce initiative, a cluster of companies throughout central Connecticut has taken shape.

Under the name “Connecticut Consortium for German Dual Apprenticeship Training” the group has been meeting at Goodwin College (pictured) several times already to give Dr. Thermer its feedback on how to construct a mechatronics curriculum which will meet their needs. The most recent meeting this past February included a mix of 25 company heads, managers and technicians.

The seeds for this endeavor were planted in May 2018, when the GACC NY invited company executives and training experts from Connecticut to a roundtable discussion on workforce development in the state.
