GAF Class Action Lawsuit
What are the lawsuits about?
In the lawsuits, Plaintiffs make claims about the durability of certain TimberlineĀ® Shingles. Plaintiffs claim that shingles manufactured from January 1, 1999 through December 31, 2007 at a GAF plant in Mobile, Alabama and from January 1, 1998 through December 31, 2009 at all other GAF manufacturing plants might prematurely crack, split, or tear (cracking, splitting or tearing of shingles is all referred to in this Notice as "cracking" or "cracked"). Plaintiffs claim that the shingles were defective. GAF claims that the shingles were not defective and that GAF's warranty appropriately covers any problems. The parties resolved the matter by compromise before reaching the merits.
What do GAF TimberlineĀ® Shingles look like?
What how are they defective?
Over the years our members have notice surface damage such as bubbles in the surface, however, this is a new lawsuit that deals with stress cracks.
Why does this concern home inspectors?
The cracks in the timberline shingles are sometimes very obvious, but not visible from the ground due to the shadow style of the shingle. Many cracks start and end along the edge of the raised wedge section of the tab. The first photo is obvious and we would all see it, but the second photo shows a crack that is often difficult to see unless you place a ladder at the eave and stand at eye level with the roof line. The cracks appear about six months to a year before actual leaks start. When you see this shingles ( 1998 to 2009) is may not be a good idea to walk on the roof surface.
