"Fall Back" November 3, 2019
|
Three “fall back” preparedness tips to consider:
- Change Smoke Alarm Batteries - Check each alarm’s batteries and test them monthly to make sure they are working. Smoke alarms with non-replaceable 10-year batteries are designed to remain effective for up to 10 years. If the alarm chirps, warning that the battery is low, replace the entire smoke alarm right away.
- Prepare an escape plan - Create an office and home escape plan and designate a meeting place outside to gather in the event of an emergency.
- Download a “Ready, Set, Go!” kit - Knowing what to do during an emergency is an important part of being prepared and can make a difference when seconds count. Learn how to prepare your family and property against wildfire threats with an action plan, available at all VCFD fire stations and online at www.VCReadySetGo.org.
NFPA
reports
in
2012-2016,
smoke alarms
were present
in three-quarters (74%) and sounded in more than half
(53%) of the home fires reported to U.S. fire departments.
Almost three of every five
home fire
deaths resulted from
fires in homes with no
smoke alarms
(40%) or no
smoke
alarms
that were working (17%)
smoke alarms provide early warnings so people can get outside quickly.

Each year during the holiday season, an evening is arranged to honor the courageous burn survivors who have been treated at the Grossman Burn Center. This year we are anticipating in excess of 200 attendees, of which approximately 75 are burn survivors.
The 37th annual event will be held on
December 07, 2019,
graciously hosted by Woodland Hills Fire Station #84.
Festivities will include a Pasadena Fire Department bagpiper, Los Angeles Fire Department color guard and welcome message. Live carolers, caricaturists and photos with Santa added to the festivities.
|
|
During the evening, burn survivors and their supporters will share their stories and experiences.
Throughout the evening the attendees participate in a silent auction to fund The Grossman Burn Foundation, which is dedicated to supporting and improving the lives of burn survivors and their families.
Grossman Burn Center and Grossman Burn Foundation employees volunteer and organize, decorate and produce this beautiful annual event!

The Future of Senior Burn Prevention & Education
Senior citizens are at particularly high risk of scalds, burn injury and death from accidental fires.
|
Changes in vision, mobility, comprehension that accompany aging, combined with medication side effects and attitudinal risks, put seniors at higher risk than younger adults of burns and scalds.
The Grossman Burn Foundation & the Grossman Burn Center are jointly addressing this risk by offering a no-charge burn prevention presentation for seniors and those who work with the elderly.
The program, available in English or Spanish, takes about 45 minutes and each participant receives reading material and prevention items to use in the home.
