GBMS Families & Community,
"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter.”
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
(Correction from last week. Thank you for holding me accountable.)

“You think your pain and your heartbreak are unprecedented in the history
of the world, but then you read. It was books that taught me that the things
that tormented me most were the very things that connected me
with all the people who were alive, who had ever been alive.”
James Baldwin

This week has been great! I would like to highlight our Student Voice Committee (SVC) who has been working hard to collaborate and show pride in our school. As a result of one SVC committee please be expecting information on a February Spirit Week.

We also have a lot going on this semester including celebrations and rigorous learning. NAEP testing is happening for some of our 8th graders, Access testing is wrapping up and then CMAS will happen for our entire school. We are working to make sure your student is prepared both academically and socially and emotionally. I look forward to having an overall great semester.

In Solidarity,
Mrs. Jennifer Anderson

Celebrate
Thank you for all of your donations for our food pantry this week! It is overwhelming to see our school community show up for one another in this way. Families in need are able to take whole bags of food home, and hungry students will always be offered a granola bar so they can stay focused in class! Your generosity makes this resource possible, thank you. If you would like to visit the food pantry, please come by or contact Mr. Boni, the school liaison at mr.sanchez@denverbeaconschools.org, 720-690-7964.

Chromebooks

Families - we need your help. Please ensure that your student has only one Chromebook and one charger. These were checked out to students at the beginning of the year. Also make sure these items are in good working order without damage to the keyboard, screen etc. If your student needs assistance with his/her/their Chromebook for any reason, a "Helpdesk" ticket at the top of the Moodle page should be completed. If your student has more than one Chromebook or power cord, please return the extra to our tech support (GB - Mr Peek, KB - Mr Lilo). We are trying to avoid confusion or unexpected charges for these items at the end of the school year, and would like your help now to avoid unpleasant surprises. Thank you.
NAEP

8th Grade Grant Beacon students will participate in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) on January 25th. NAEP is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what students know and can do in various subjects. NAEP is different from our state assessments because it is a common measure of achievement across the country. The assessment is administered by the National Center for Education Statistics, within the U.S. Department of Education. The results are released as The Nation’s Report Card, which provides information about student achievement to educators, parents, policymakers, and the public.  This brochure contains more information. Not all 8th graders take the assessment. Students are randomly selected. You will receive a letter IF your 8th grader was selected to take the assessment.
Enrichments

Thank you to everyone who donated funds, yarn, fabric and other supplies to the new Fabric Art enrichment! Students are having fun and are in various stages of completing satchels!
Fundraising
It’s fundraising season! We are gearing up and excited for our annual Enriching Lives fundraising event to be held April 11 - April 22. Save the date for a special celebration event on April 21, 2022 from 6:00 - 8:00pm! We had previously announced this event would be held at the Grant Humphreys Mansion and have since decided to seek a more cost friendly venue so that funds donated can go directly to providing enriching learning opportunities for our students. There will be refreshments, student artwork and performances, a live auction, and more! You won’t want to miss this event.
How can you help?
We are seeking auction items! Perhaps you or someone you know would donate: Teaching a class/workshop such as Yoga or Cooking, Art, Music Performances, Travel, Vacation Home Stay, Hotel Stay, Airline miles, Spa Day, Sports Tickets, Golf outing, Ski passes, Gift Baskets, Restaurant Gift Cards, Sports or Music Memorabilia.
