Jon,

It's hard to believe we're already in November!

November isn't just about fall foliage and who puts their Christmas trees up before Thanksgiving. GCDD is bringing you everything you might've missed and then some in the November Newsletter.

Hear from KeArus Henderson in our Member Spotlight, recalibrate on what it means to be a Self Advocate, explore Community Events and holidays or grab a coffee and read through the Business Section.

We hope that everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving surrounded by family, friends and, most importantly, food.

Thank you,

GCDD Staff

November is National Family Caregivers Month, a time for us to celebrate and honor caregivers. This year’s theme is #CaregiversConnect.

Caregivers are crucial members of our communities, tending to the needs or concerns of loved ones with an illness, injury or disability. They're some of the hardest working, most compassionate, fearless individuals, each deserving of celebration each and every day.

The month-long celebration also presents an opportunity to:

  • Raise awareness of family caregiver issues
  • Celebrate the efforts of family caregivers
  • Educate family caregivers about self-identification
  • Increase support for family caregivers
  • Reduce feelings of isolation

Reach out to a caregivers you know and let them know just how much you appreciate them. You can click the button below to learn more about #NationalFamilyCaregiversMonth and discover ways to give back to caregivers across the nation.

Member Spotlight:

KeArus Henderson - Public Policy and Outreach Committee

Council member KeArus Henderson wanted to share a few words with you in this month’s member spotlight.

"My name is KeArus Henderson. I was born and raised in Little Rock, Arkansas. I love being with family and friends. The Lord is first in my life, I grow strength in just knowing him. I am basically a happy person. My hobbies are watching sports and movies. I like eating out with family, laughing, and talking with them. My 86-year-old great-grandmother is an inspiration to me. She is so full of life and very caring. I am still her baby. I am blessed to have my mother, Tangela, stepfather, Kevin, my sister, Deszan, grandparents, Wally and Linda, aunts, uncles and cousins who are great advocates in my life, overseeing my health and wellness."

My purpose in this life is to live life to the fullest. I don’t have any space for those who are filled with hatred or negativity and have a possessive and controlling spirit. In short, I want to live and let live.

Henderson lives in Little Rock, Arkansas. He serves on the Governor's Council on Developmental Disabilities Public Policy and Outreach Committee.

Thank you, KeArus, for your service with the Council and for reminding us to live life to the fullest.

Empowering Self Advocacy

It’s fundamental that we keep ‘self’ at the core of self-advocacy and its three stages to promote Inclusion, Integration and Independence.
