Why Are You Doing Test Pits?
Field tests, otherwise known as test pits, are being completed to further the Project's engineering efforts.
We caught up with Eversource's Allison Klein to ask her more about it.
What is a test pit?
A test pit is a tool used to refine the underground duct bank design to determine location and depth of utilities and possible conflicts, depth of bedrock, or other purposes where specific soil property testing sampling is not required.
Why is the Project doing test pits?
To confirm that the existing underground utilities and conflicts shown on our plans are in the locations and depths anticipated as identified on our surveys. Confirming this information allows us to shift the proposed duct bank or manhole location as needed based on the actual location of existing infrastructure.
Elsewhere along the routes, geotechnical and thermal resistivity borings will provide data on soil classifications and properties that also influence the designs.
Allison Klein is Eversource’s Lead Transmission Line Engineer on the Greater Cambridge Energy Program. Allison has worked for Eversource for 12 years.
