Every Sunday of Lent we will celebrate Communion.

Remember that our COVID practice has been to use anything you have at home for your elements. Your bread can be a cracker, bagel or even a donut. Your cup can be a glass of water or anything else you have on hand.

The spirit of our Presbyterian practice of Communion is that the body of Christ is not found in the elements themselves, but in the community gathered together to share this meal of revolutionary love.

Reserve a space for childcare this Sunday!

Please follow this LINK to reserve a space for your child 0-4 years of age for childcare on Sunday, April 3rd @ 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

As long as it is dry outside we plan on spending the majority of the morning outdoors. Please dress your children with this in mind. We will have a table in the welcome center to check your child in and do a temperature check. Please do not hesitate to reach out to [email protected] with any questions or if you have any issues with the reservations.

All families are encouraged to submit a family health & wellness form. This will help us know more about your children’s health needs as we move forward. Please contact Cat Kessler if you have any trouble submitting the form.

Palms for Palm Sunday

Sunday April 10th is Palm Sunday where we celebrate the Triumphal Entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. As a part of this celebration we wave palms in celebration of this day. If you are in town we will have palms available to pick up Saturday at Grace Covenant in the courtyard beginning at 10 am for you to use with online worship.

There is also a printable palm here  for you to color or print in color.

Deacon Helpers Needed!

Our deacon helpers are an informal list of GCPC community members who get updates when there is a congregational need. These needs include meals, rides to doctor appointments, and other concerns that come up in the church family. We are so thankful for everyone already on the list for all they do for our congregation! There also is room for it to grow as our congregation grows! Please contact Richard for more info or to be placed on the list.

Serve Spotlight...

BeLoved's Tiny Home Village

You’ve likely become familiar with GCPC Serve Partner BeLoved, their leader Rev. Amy Cantrell, and their amazing advocacy for the un-housed and unstably housed in our region, but you may not be aware that they are about to break ground on a truly innovative approach to offering sustainable and affordable housing for individuals and families. Plans are progressing for the construction of a village of twelve Tiny Homes on donated land in East Asheville. A community-wide project, supported by several congregations as well as the Asheville Home Builders Association and private individuals, the project uses donated materials and pro bono professional guidance from architects, engineers, and surveyors. It is one proposed solution to the lack of affordable housing in the area, and targets households with incomes that are 30% of the area median income. By offering a welcoming community and housing stability, the Tiny Homes project is a forward-thinking solution to the regional housing crisis.

The cost of one 440-square foot tiny house is approximately $90,000. We know that having a home helps individuals and families put down roots, and is a win-win for both the resident and the community. This planned community will serve as both an immediate resource as well as a model for further development, offering opportunities for housing that are very much needed in the city having the highest rental costs in the state of North Carolina. The development itself will be a non-profit trust that owns the homes, given legal barriers to subdividing the project, but the community members will establish the rules and governance for the maintenance of the homes. Communities that create opportunities for people to use their agency around their daily needs cultivates a sense of well-being and positive health outcomes. The residents will benefit from accrued equity in the homes as if they owned them: If they move away, residents will be able to take their equity with them. If they elect to stay a while, they may also borrow against their equity.

With 75% of the funding in place for this project, BeLoved is hoping their upcoming Raise a Home (RAH) Auction event on April 30, 2022 from 6 pm until 9 pm at the AB Tech Mission Health Campus will help them cross the fundraising finish line. There will be both a live and a silent auction, a jazz band, heavy hors d’oeuvres, and a bar. In addition to supporting an amazing cause, attendees of the RAH Auction can expect to connect with others interested in meaningful solutions to one of the most pressing problems faced in our community, while they learn more about this project and support a wonderful cause.

Learn more and buy tickets at BeLovedRAHAuction.org.

The following is a piece written by Rev. Tamara Puffer. The Presbytery of WNC has validated her ministry as a Minister of Vulnerability at GCPC.

Being Vulnerable

Being vulnerable at one’s job is tough. In some cases it may not be wise which is unfortunate. I believe that we as Jesus followers are called to be bravely transparent and honest with those around us. In our dog-eat-dog world, this isn’t always possible.

Here is a story of a vulnerable person in his place of employment although I doubt he would use that word to describe his actions. Ten years ago, I had Thumb Basil Joint Osteoarthritis. To a layperson (such as myself) that meant I didn’t have enough cartilage in my thumb joint so the bone was rubbing onto the bone.

After a time of trying not to use it, I decided I needed surgery. The surgery was successful and outside of not being able to swim at the Y, it wasn’t too bad. The correction lasted for about two years when it started becoming weak again. I went back to the doctor and he told me that in about 4% of the cases this type of surgery was unsuccessful. I fell into that 4%.

He said there was another surgical procedure that could be performed but he had only completed it a few times and recommended another surgeon in his practice who had performed this procedure in that way numerous times. The doctor was honest with himself and with me. He could have just agreed to do the surgery but instead he suggested I look into other surgeons with more experience with this type of surgery. In this way he was honest and openly transparent which I appreciated. I’m sure he would not have used the term vulnerable to describe his action, but that is exactly what it was.

I had the surgery in Charlotte and it was successful. I have another issue with a finger in that hand – hopefully it’s not related to the Osteoarthritis. I will return to the first surgeon who made himself vulnerable.

We talk a lot about vulnerability here at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church but what does it mean to you? I would be interested in any thoughts you might have. My email is [email protected].

Donate a rock for our new flower beds!

Have an extra rock or two laying around that you don't need? We are looking for rocks about the size of a cantaloupe or a football, or maybe a spaghetti squash, to help line our new perennial flower beds at the Community Garden. The rocks will delineate the flower beds and help keep grass from creeping in. You can paint or decorate your rocks or just leave them be. We can have a rock decorating day with kids at the church when we get enough. Please drop off your rocks by May 1st in the black bin labeled, GARDEN RICKS" in the GCPC courtyard or down by the compost bins at the Community Garden near McDonald's parking lot.

Last Friday, YTL participants helped Allison plant carrot seeds and broccoli and spinach starts in the World Garden outside the Administrative Building.

Thank you YTL!!!

Racism impacts refugees of color in Ukraine -

Reports cite cases of Black and brown people being blocked trying to escape the war

~ by Gail Strange

It’s been a little more than a month since Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a “special military operation” to “demilitarize and denazify” Ukraine on the morning of Feb. 24.

Most recently the BBC reported that according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) more than 10 million people have now fled their homes in Ukraine following the Russian invasion.

The journey of escaping the missiles, airstrikes and burning buildings throughout Ukraine has not been easy for anyone. But recent reports have highlighted that it has been especially difficult for people of color.

Lean in and enjoy.”

The McCormick Student Council and Board of Deacons hosted Saturday’s three-hour “Thurman Symposium: The Beloved Community Experience.” Dr. Steed Davidson, dean of the faculty, said he was “proud of the daring feat our students have undertaken hosting this symposium.” Watch the forum here.

‘COVID-19 did not discriminate, but we did’ -

Poor People’s Campaign report maps the intersections of poverty, race and COVID-19

~ by Mike Ferguson

The Poor People’s Campaign, co-chaired by Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) pastor and theologian the Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharis, took to the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., Monday to release a detailed report connecting information about COVID-19 deaths to demographic characteristics including income, race, health insurance status and more.

You’ve got to let us wail,” Theoharis said, quoting her “dear sister and leader” in the PPC, Kelly Greer. “Wail for children, elders and siblings who are no more.”

“As we are showing today,” Theoharis said of the report, available here with the executive summary found here, “it is the poor and low-income who have been hurt first and worst and are feeling the greatest loss still.”
