The Serve Council is excited to share that Asheville Poverty Initiative (API) will be this year's Advent Ministry Partner.
On Christmas Eve, gifts designated to API (in the memo line of your check) will be given to help their mission.
Asheville Poverty Initiative and 12 Baskets Cafe aims to end the social injustice of poverty in partnership with those on the margins through opportunities for education, advocacy, and relationship building. People from all walks of life are encouraged to come and meet their neighbors at 12 Baskets Café - a by-donation Cafe that serves rescued food from local restaurants.
|
|
A Story from API/12 Baskets Cafe
His name is Koda. He’s a regular at the Café. In his late 20’s, Koda has experienced more heartache than most. Diagnosed with cancer at a young age, he married his best friend whom he met at the hospital while she was also receiving chemo treatments. It was her dream to have a wedding before she died, and he made that dream come true. Koda is homeless and one of the kindest humans you will ever meet. He struggles with addiction while also trying to care for everyone with whom he comes into contact.
When asking for a sewing kit to fix his backpack, he shared that he’d traveled all over but had never been anywhere like 12 Baskets. He said, “It’s like family here. I mean, y’all are the closest thing I have to family and if y’all ever need anything just let me know. I want to give back anyway I can.” It’s true. We are like family.

Amber the Abundance Fairy says:
"There's so much we have to wait for at Advent... Don't let you pledge be one of them!"
Help us celebrate GCPC Abundance by getting us to our pledge goal - get your pledge in today or increase your pledge.
We can do this Grace Covenant!
|
|
Of the 217 pledges received thus far, 106 have increased and
16 are first-time pledgers!
We've made great strides in the past two months towards the goal, but we still have a way to go to fully fund the proposed 2020 budget.
If you have already pledged
, please prayerfully consider increasing to help us close this $222,517 gap.
If you haven't pledged yet, we need your help! Every penny helps us fund the ministry alive here at GCPC. No matter how large or small, each pledge makes a difference and provides the financial support needed to build a sustainable future.
|
|
Our current pledge numbers as of 12/5/19:
|
|
To submit a 2020 pledge,
you can fill out an easy
online option here
or put your completed pledge card in the Sunday plate, bring it by the office, or mail it to 789 Merrimon Ave, Asheville, NC 28804. Pledge cards are available in the pews, narthex, and at the Welcome Desk.
|
|
2020 Pledge Prepay
In addition to catching up on 2019 giving, many of you have asked about prepaying your 2020 pledge. You can prepay anytime, but it's very important to clearly mark these gifts as 2020 pledges. If a gift is made without a memo or envelope designating it otherwise, it will be applied to the current year general fund through 12/31/19
. If you are planning on prepaying your next year's pledge, please be sure to include
"2020 pledge prepay"
somewhere on your gift to ensure our Finance Office records it as you intended.

You can bring joy and hope to immigrants in detention by writing and decorating holiday cards in English and Spanish.
El Refugio is collecting hand-written holiday cards to send to detained immigrants at Stewart Detention Center, where many immigrants from the Carolinas, Georgia, and other Southeastern states are held indefinitely. We know that detained immigrants face many challenges, especially the uncertainty of not knowing if or when they will be free and reunited with loved ones. With your help, we can send a message of hope and comfort to those who are isolated in detention, far from friends and family during the holidays.

Power and Race Team (PART)

PART Meeting | Thursday, December 12 | 7:00 PM | Jerusalem Room
Our work continues in disrupting white supremacy individually and as a church community. Even if we get frustrated, restless, or just tired of talking about it, God does not let us off the hook.
PART therefore continues to meet. On December 12
th
at 7pm we will discuss how we can collaborate with session, councils, and committees on being accountable in eliminating white supremacy, and healing our racial trauma.
As Marcia said in her sermon entitled No Shame, “It is a Gospel message really- that invitation for us to get real about the trauma and resilience we have in our bodies, that has been passed down to us and that we carry around the world and pass on to others. God’s healing opportunities define the story of who we are.”
Whether you have attended PART in the past or not, this meeting is a great opportunity to take another step together as a community.
Come and do your PART to hope and dream and plan for 2020!

Raising White Kids: Bringing Up Children in a Racially Unjust World
by Jennifer Harvey
(call no. 649 HAR)
The United States is on a rapid path of becoming one of the most racially diverse nations in the world. It’s also a nation full of racial tension. These two realities existing at the same time create a challenging paradox for parents who want to equip their children to be active and able participants in a multiracial, pluralistic society.
The difficulties faced by parents of white children, however, are different from those faced by parents of children of color. Being committed to equity and justice while living in a society that is not only racially unjust and deeply segregated, but which privileges your racial group at the same time, creates unique conundrums for white people. These conundrums begin early in life and impact the racial development of white children in powerful ways.
How do parents navigate the many complex situations race creates for us? What strategies will help our children learn to function well in a diverse nation? What role do we want them to play in addressing racism when they encounter it? How do we equip them for these roles? How do we talk about race honestly with our children, which means naming white privilege as well as many hard truths about what white people have done, without making our children feel bad about being white?
These questions are honestly and helpfully addressed in this very timely and helpful book.

"Las Posadas" | Thursday, December 19 | 6:30 - 8:30 PM | Cathedral of All Souls
The Cathedral of All Souls invites GCPC to celebrate "Las Posadas" with them in December. The event is a traditional celebration of Mary and Joseph trying to find room to be sheltered and cared for. The Church La Capilla
http://lacapilla.org
presides over the event and our role is to host and gather and bring the party! We provide food, piñata, and hopefully LOADS of people!
While the tradition is really focused on the exile of Mary and Joseph we acknowledge in our worship and singing and prayers together that many of our LatinX brothers and sisters are being turned away today and we pray for all to find homes and shelter and care and love during this time of re-birth of compassion.

Making Room for Joy – an Advent Retreat with Jeannie Dubose | December 6-7 | Lake Logan
Enter the Advent Season with this 24-hour retreat facilitated by Jeannie Dubose. Whether you are in the midst of a sunny stretch or a blue patch, come explore how “Making Room for Joy” can draw you closer to God. We will reflect on the theological context for this topic, as well as addressing how part of accessing our delight includes a willingness to acknowledge our losses. In addition, we will engage music, images, poetry, scripture, and interactive questions — all as portals for awakening, as John O’Donohue says, “to what your heart would love to say.”
