I sense there is this mystery:
All life is being lived.
Who is living it, then?
Is it the things themselves,
or something waiting inside them,
like an unplayed melody in a flute?
~ Rainer Maria Rilke, from "I Sense There Is This Mystery"

NEWS FLASH:
GCPC received a mini grant from the NC Council of Churches: Partners in Health & Wholeness Division to educate our congregation on the healing aspects of a prayer labyrinth.
The funds will cover some of the costs for an adult Sunday school class (during Lent),
and for youth and children’s activities.
The labyrinth experience is often referred to as a “Prayer Walk.” Walking a labyrinth promotes reduction in stress and a feeling of peace. The grant proposal was sponsored by the Earth Team. The application for the Grant specified that GCPC would emphasize increased physical activity/mental health awareness and sharing the message of health as a faith issue. We hope someday, to fulfill a vision of a ‘Healing Labyrinth’ on our property that will help us heal our spirits, our community and our land.

Whoops!
A few weeks ago there was some online stewardship revelry going on. Remember? Folks were celebrating the news that the $50,000 matching challenge had been met. A lot of wonderful, committed GCPC members had increased their 2020 pledges enough to surpass the goal. Yay! Great news! We did it! You could almost visualize happy dancing going on in the church narthex.
Unfortunately, it seems as if many of us have mistakenly assumed meeting the matching dollar challenge meant we had met the overall 2020 stewardship goal. A lot of folks apparently breathed a deep, collective sigh of relief muttering, “Well thank the Lord that’s over!” Nuh-uh. It wasn’t over.
We met the matching $50,000 challenge goal. Yes. However, we are still $98,125 away from achieving the stewardship income budget goal of $1,200,000.
So, since pledges and pledge increases have slowed down to a trickle the past three weeks, this is what’s been done: Cuts! Budget cuts! Members of Finance Council and staff have worked hard going line-by-line seeing where we can reduce costs.
The big cut was the line item for replacing the roof on the education building. That will have to wait another year or until funding is available. Even after removing th
e roof replacement and all the other cuts, we are still left with a budget shortfall of -$40,000.
Now what? Well, for those of you who have never pledged, please consider doing so. For those of you who have pledged in the past but have not yet done so this year, please do so now. For those of you who do pledge but did not increase your pledge, please prayerfully consider whether you can increase your pledge in some way.
Remember, pledging is all about funding the ministry and mission of your congregation. When divided among the hundreds of people who are active at GCPC, $40,000 is a manageable amount. Do the math! Maybe we can all do some happy dancing in the narthex very soon to a balanced budget.
Gratefully,
Your 2020 Stew Crew

Anti-Semitism plays a key role in upholding white supremacy.
The Lent 2020 lectionary readings from the Gospel of John are challenging for Christians trying to counter anti-Jewish/anti-Semitic interpretations of these stories. In a time when anti-Semitic violence is on the rise the responsibility of Christians to dismantle anti-Jewish/anti-Semitic readings of the Bible is crucial.
In this webinar, we will offer an historical overview of the context of John’s gospel, basic definitions of anti-Semitism and its biblical roots, key corrections to anti-Jewish readings of the texts, and possible new interpretations that hold the complexity of the 4 lectionary stories with more care.
This webinar will be particularly useful for Christian clergy, seminarians, and lay leaders committed to dismantling anti-Semitism. That said, all are welcome to join and learn.

Pressure Points | The Theology and Legacy of Dietrich Bonhoeffer | Choir Room
A German theologian who called out 'cheap grace' and dreamed of a 'religionless Christianity,' Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a vital part of the Confessing Church who stood against Adolph Hitler's Third Reich at a time when most German Christian churches acquiesced to Nazism. He was executed in 1945 by the state for his part in a plot to overthrow the fascist regime. In our class together, we will learn from his theology and discuss why his legacy is currently being fought over by Christians with divergent viewpoints today.

The Improv | Justice, Money and God: Exploring God’s call for right relationship (justice) by considering our relationship to money | FH
A lot of the Bible talks about money. In fact, money was Jesus’ most talked about topic. Money influences and has power in many of our relationships: our faith, our culture, our church. We will explore God’s call for justice and righteousness and wrestle together with where money fits into it all. In this class we'll be deepening relationships with each other, and hopefully seeing possibilities for new ways of relating to God, to ourselves, to each other, and to money.

The deacons have a list of people in our congregation available to provide meals, rides, and other needs to those who can use them, for example, when members have surgery, suffer a loss, or greet a new baby. When we identify a need, a sign-up is sent out to our helpers, and they can choose what dates to provide a meal, etc. It would be wonderful if we could expand this list.
