Deacon of the Week:
The Deacon of the Week is available to talk, provide support, and coordinate care if needed. You are not alone. You are loved. Please reach out to our deacon of the week if you have any needs or concerns.
This week (1/25-1/31) Liz Harris-Lamkin | email: chaplainehl@gmail.com
Next week (2/1-2/7) Therese Schuele | email: thereseschuele@gmail.com
Deacon of the Week Prayer:
Loving and Lamenting God,
Hold with us our paucity to love boldly and to remember that anger can be love too, like Jesus ‘turning over the tables’ of injustice. Grant us courage as individuals and as a community to discern and act upon Your will during this fraught time of national dis-ease. Despite all the external clamor, we are grateful for the new members who have said yes to the work of GCPC, grateful for the intimate ‘fish bowl’ conversations in recent days, and grateful for the new set of elders and deacons who are investing precious energy for this community. May we tend and care for each other and we pray for those with specific losses and pain and illness. Amen.

Newer GCPC Members might be asking, what is the Pride Collective?
The Pride Collective at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church was established to further support individuals in our congregation who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and/or queer. They also invite those who are questioning their gender identity and/or their sexual orientation. Parent allies are also welcomed.
GCPC's Pride Collective is a rare community where members work to find a balance with the LGBTQIA+ identities and the thirst for God's continued blessings through shared meals, fellowship, friendship, support, conversation, and love. The group is supported by GCPC's commitment to create an inclusive and hospitable place of spiritual growth by identifying and breaking down white supremacy culture within the Christian context.

Community Garden End of Year Report News
2024 brought us many challenges starting with bad drought conditions throughout the summer, blight that wiped out some of our tomatoes and then a hurricane that blew over some of our crops! Despite this, we were able to be resilient and share the remaining produce from the garden with the hurricane relief center at the church. In 2024, we shared just over 6,000 pounds of fresh food with our partners in spite of the crop losses.
2025 brought us opportunities for reconnection and healing in the garden. It was a great growing year with plentiful rain throughout most of the spring and summer seasons. Volunteer turnout was a little lower as everyone was still recovering from the hurricane impacts, but we still managed to share over 7,500 pounds of fresh produce with our partners, including a new local Thanksgiving share market.

RESCHEDULED!!
Black in Asheville: “Urban Renewal Impact” The Movie | Saturday, February 21 | 7:00 PM | Asheville Community Theater Mainstage
Urban Renewal Impact takes a hard look at Asheville’s past through the lens of those who lived it. This film traces how city leaders, long focused on cultivating Asheville as a white-led tourism destination, excluded Black residents from their plans. From convict leasing that forced Black men to build the city’s foundation to federally funded projects that razed entire Black neighborhoods, Urban Renewal Impact reveals a truth rarely acknowledged: progress for some came at the expense of others.
Runtime: This a two hour long event including a Q&A after the film.
Tickets: This event is free, but tickets must be reserved in advance. Any remaining tickets will be available on the day of the show through the Box Office. Seating is general admission.
Sponsored by Rotary of Asheville and Asheville Community Theatre.

Supporting Each Other
In a time with such chaos and challenges, it can be difficult to find hope and inspiration. Together, however, we are making a difference. Here are five items that may be helpful to each of us as we continue to take action and resist.
-
The world is watching: In a Facebook post, a Canadian activist noted that the world sees what is happening in the US and encourages those who resist to continue to take action.
-
Dr. King's Optimism: In this excerpt from Dr. King's final essay, A Testament of Hope, he shares how he continues to be optimistic but explains the importance of continuing to work for equality.
-
The heroes among us: Historian Heather Cox Richardson offers a daily blog post. Here is the five minute audio version of one from January 18th that highlights how ordinary people, people just like us, are continuing to take action, thus providing hope.
-
The Walk for Peace: “[T]he 120-day, 2,300-mile journey by Buddhist monks — with loyal dog, Aloka — walking from Fort Worth, Texas, to Washington, D.C. is to raise awareness of peace, loving kindness, and compassion across America and the world.” You can check out their progress on their Facebook page.
-
Corporations That Are Keeping Their Promises: In this blog post from Popular Information, the writer reports on 10 corporations that have kept their promise to not financially support those who were 2020 election deniers.
Thanks for all you continue to do to maintain our democracy, support social justice, and make positive change! If there are people wishing to subscribe to this e-newsletter, they only need to complete this form and click the subscribe button.

Sacred Jazz for Social Justice | POSTPONED TO APRIL 18 | 7:00 PM | Dreaming Stone Arts & Ecology Center
Warren Cooper is a seasoned artist, producer, and broadcaster who runs a production company in Philadelphia that nurtures the movement for non-violent justice and peace. As a performance artist, content creator, and musician, Warren pursues virtuosity as an ultimate vehicle of expression. His wide array of experience and passion for human rights, environmental justice, and spiritual health yield a uniquely flavored approach to putting a message in the music. As a movement activist, he continues to blend boundaries and create safe, open, and intentional spaces for conversations that incubate possibilities and pathways to peaceful ways of being.
His worldview was shaped by the coupled realities of growing up as a Black male in the shadow of Philadelphia’s 1964 race riots and by his father’s commitment to reaching (from a spiritual center) across cultures and sectors to build bridges of Beloved Community.
