Parent Conferences &
Early Dismissal 3/25-3/27
|
Dear Parents and Community Members, You are invited... Tuesday, 3/24 2:00-3:15 PM
You have heard all about
SPARK
, but do you wonder how we use the
SPARK
guidelines here at GCS? You are invited to school on Tuesday afternoon to find out.
From 2:00-2:30, multi-grade teams of students will collaborate to create skits about SPARK behavior. Parents are welcome to participate alongside students as they write their skits.
From 2:30-3:15, the teams will share the results of their collaboration and perform their skits for the audience. Parents are strongly encouraged to come and support the children as they teach you about the SPARK expectations for behavior at GCS. If you can't attend for the entire time, please be sure to be here at 2:30 for the SPARK presentations.
Raising the Bar for Reading Success
The chart below shows the percentage of students who have scored at or above the 50th percentile in Reading over the past three years. You can see that the percentage of students scoring at or above this district benchmark has significantly increased this year. The blue and red bars show the percentage of students at or above the 50th percentile on the end of year STAR Reading assessment in 2013 and 2014. The green bar shows the percentage of students scoring at or above the district benchmark on the January 2015 assessment. I expect students to exceed the district goal of 80% on the end of the year assessment.
Literacy Tip of the week: 'Picture This'
Looking for something crafty to do with your child?During your next family outing or gathering, take some photos. Then, have your child create captions to go with each picture. Assemble the pictures and captions into a photo book, add speech bubbles and personalize! This can be their own graphic novel!
When should I stop reading aloud to my child?
Your child is never too old to listen to a good story! We all know that reading aloud to younger children exposes them to rich, complex language, builds their vocabulary, and prepares them for success in school. But did you know that it is equally important to read aloud to older students? According to educator and author Jim Trelease, "a child's listening level doesn't catch up to their reading level until 8th grade." Older students can grapple with difficult concepts and understand complex text that they may not yet be able to read on their own. Parents who read aloud to their children for enjoyment are whetting their appetites and are more apt to develop a lifelong love for reading.

The before school program is from 6:30 a.m. until the start of school and the after school program runs until 6:00 p.m. Parents of Region 6 students would be responsible for transportation.
