Updating reliability, availability numbers for aero, "E" class, "F" class engines

 

President Sal DellaVilla Jr of Strategic Power Systems Inc (SPS) told the editors that his company's preparation for the annual Western Turbine Users conference normally begins with a careful look at ORAP´┐Ż (Operational Reliability Analysis Program) performance metrics for aeroderivative (aero), "E" class, and "F" class technologies across all OEMs and a wide range of owner/operators. For 25 years, SPS's ORAP data have provided the opportunity to assess and understand trends in equipment duty and performance. more

 

Strong rebound for GT orders in 2011

 

When WTUI met in Palm Springs last March, the gas-turbine business in the US was in tough shape. In fact, Mark Axford, principal, Axford Turbine Consultants LLC, Houston, summed up the situation by saying, "And you thought the housing market was lousy." US orders for gas turbines were at a five-year low. Worldwide orders for gas turbines, while up from 2009, also were at 2005 levels. The question asked at that time: "Is this the new normal or will 2011 bring a rebound?" more

Solar storm activity high; NERC report discusses likely outcomes, offers recommendations

 

Spectacular auroras defined solar storms that exploded from the surface of the sun last week. The most potent storm since 2004, released March 6, reportedly caused only minor disruptions to terrestrial communications systems. The electric power grid was unaffected. But more storms are on the way, reports NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md. more
