Students of the month

Jazelle Gardner

Syracuse Junior High

Grade 8

"I really appreciate GEAR UP because they have helped me with my grades and will continue to help me with experiencing new things. They will help me with going to college and getting into my future career. Without my GEAR UP Advisors, I honestly would never have put this much effort into my love of math. I love the field trips we get to go on, I get to see universities that I may want to go to in the future."

Elisha Yang

Bonneville High School

Grade 12

" I love being part of the GEAR UP program! I first joined back in my 9th grade at T.H. Bell Jr. High. I was very new to the school and I was introduced to the GEAR UP program by some friends I've made. I love how I was given many opportunities to be able to visit different universities to get a full fill of what it's like, and if I'm interested in attending. I love how reliable GEAR UP is and all the great perks they have to offer for us as students to prepare for our future! I am so thankful for my time in GEAR UP and for the guidance it's given me in the works of preparing for my own future!"

Meet our new addition!

America Rubio

Advisor

TH Bell

My name is America Rubio, I am the new GEAR UP advisor at TH Bell. I work alongside Erica Green, at THB and SOJH for the program. I graduated from Ben Lomond High School in 2020 (Go Scots!) and then graduated from Weber State University majoring in Health Sciences in 2021, totally different from what I'm doing now which is kind of funny. I absolutely love the medical field but after some trial and error I've found that I LOVE working with kids even more, especially teenagers. This is my second job, as I also serve as an afterschool program coordinator at Ogden High School. I look forward to meeting and working with all of you in order to help our students succeed!

Recap

Summer Connection Experience

GEAR UP Summer Connections is an multi-day event for

students who recently graduated and will be attending Weber

State University in the Fall.

Students who participate become familiar with resources and

services on campus that are critical to their transition and

success as a college student. These sessions help students

gain confidence in their abilities to succeed and navigate life

at WSU. Each student has the opportunity to meet and

connect with other first-vear students and GEAR UP alumni on

campus.

Scholarship Summer Bash

In July, students participated in a two day scholarship summer bash. While there they learned the ins and outs on how to find a scholarship in financial aid for college. But what's a GEAR UP activity without a ton of fun? These two days were full of fun activities including bowling and billiards, team building activities, community service at the Ogden Weber Community Action Partnership (OWCAP), and the Classic Fun Center for the whole family.

Food, FUNding & Your Future.

In June, GEAR UP students and their families parcitipated in WSU's Food, FUNding & Your Future Event at the WSU Ogden Campus. Click below to see the fun.

GEAR UP Day

Over 100 of our GEAR UP students gathered to celebrate National GEAR UP Week. Students participated in activities at both the Weber State University Davis Campus and Utah Valley University, where they heard from keynote and guest speakers, received free swag, and got to know GEAR UP students from other schools.
