Financial Aid Feature

Steps for Financial Aid: Understanding Your Awards

If you have applied for financial aid, you may be offered several different types of aid. Not all financial aid is created equal.

It's important that you know and understand what you are being offered. It's always ok to ask questions to help you learn more about your financial aid.

Grants

WhatIsAPellGrant.jpg
  • Financial aid that does not need to be repaid
  • Usually federal (e.g., Pell grant) but can also be from the institution
  • Eligibility usually depends on your financial need (as determined by your FAFSA).
  • Must complete a FAFSA (and any required verification) to apply for federal & LCCC grants

Scholarships

  • Financial aid that does not need to be repaid
  • Can be from the institution, private donors (LCCC has over 400 private donor scholarships for our students!), or community or national organizations
  • Eligibility is usually based on certain criteria such as grades, skills, or involvement in specific activities
  • You must apply specifically for scholarships - many have their own applications; the LCCC donor scholarship application helps connect you to the majority of our donor scholarships

Federal Student Loans

TypesofLoans.jpg
  • Financial aid that you do have to repay
  • No repayment required until after you have stopped attending school at least half-time
  • Low, fixed interest rates
  • Subsidized student loans = the loan does not accrue interest while you are in school
  • Unsubsidized student loans = the loan accrues interest while you are in school (and after)
  • Must complete a FAFSA to apply for federal student loans

Other Financial Aid Options

WhatIsFWS.jpg
  • Federal Work Study is an optional type of financial aid that can help you be eligible for some on-campus jobs.
  • Not all on-campus jobs require Federal Work Study.
  • You have to find, apply for, and be selected for an on-campus job in order to be considered for Federal Work Study
  • Alternative student loans are typically a "last-resort" option for LCCC students who may not be eligible for federal financial aid or who need additional financial resources
  • Alternative loans do not have all of the same perks of federal student loans (such as the low, fixed interest rate or flexible repayment options).

Accepting & Rejecting Financial Aid

No matter what type of financial aid you are offered, it is up to you to decide if you want any of it.

You must accept or reject your financial aid awards, using the Self-Service app in your myLCCC account.

LCCC Technology Update

Due to the increased need to safeguard your student information, LCCC is enabling Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for all student accounts on June 28, 2021. This prevents someone from stealing your account in the event that your password becomes compromised.

You may already be familiar with MFA, from other websites such as financial institutions or commerce sites. The way it works is that you will now need two things to get into your LCCC account: something that you know, which is your password, and something that you have, such as your cell phone. There are multiple options for how you can use your smartphone or mobile device to authenticate your login.

You’ll register for MFA the first time you sign in to your myLCCC account on or after June 28, and will be required to authenticate to log in whenever you are signing in from an off-campus network.
