SERIES OF OVERNIGHT TEST OPENINGS SCHEDULED FOR GEORGE P. COLEMAN MEMORIAL BRIDGE

Motorists should expect delays nightly Oct. 5-6 between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m.

YORK COUNTY – Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) bridge crews are scheduled to perform a series of overnight test openings on the George P. Coleman Bridge (Route 17) this week, each lasting approximately 20 minutes or less.

The openings are scheduled to occur nightly Wednesday, Oct. 5 and Thursday, Oct. 6, between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m. After each opening, crews will reopen the travel lanes on the bridge to allow any traffic queues to clear between openings.

The Coleman Bridge is a double-swing span structure over the York River that connects Gloucester Point and Yorktown. The openings are necessary for bridge inspections required annually.

VDOT attempts to schedule maintenance and non-emergency repair work during travel periods when traffic volumes are lower to reduce impacts on motorists.

Before heading out on the road, motorists are advised to check for current bridge openings underway and plan their commute by using VDOT’s free traffic information tools:
