Ted Mitchell of Great Falls based Mitchell Development & Investments announced a major 100-acre mixed use retail, dining, hospitality, office and residential development to be constructed on 57th Street on the east side of Great Falls. The Falls is designed to become the premier destination shopping, entertainment, living, and business center in Montana with an estimated multi-year investment of $500-700 million. Plans include 630,000 square feet of retail and office space, two hotels, 831 residential units, over a dozen restaurants, and two miles of trails plus 20 acres of beautifully landscaped public spaces. The first hotel is scheduled to open by Fall 2026. See details on KRTV and TheElectric. What a fantastic addition to our community and region!

1) Montana Renewables, a subsidiary of Calumet, closed on a $1.44 million U.S. Department of Energy loan facility that will enable the expansion of the company's Great Falls production plant. The expansion of will make Montana Renewables one of the largest Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) producers in the world, enabling an increase in annual production capacity to 300 million gallons of SAF and 330 million gallons of combined SAF and renewable diesel. Montana Renewables will double its purchases of seed oils and tallow to 3 billion pounds a year. The expansion will create 450 construction jobs and 40 operations jobs. 2) Our Ignite 2025 at The Newberry was a resounding success, with our largest attendance ever—approximately 350 participants—and 27 dynamic presentations. These showcased the breadth of innovation in North Central Montana, from rural businesses and non-profits to agri-food ventures and the announcement of a new 100 acre mixed-use development project on the East end of Great Falls. Thank you to everyone who made this milestone event unforgettable! 3) There are three grand openings in Downtown Great Falls! Life in Bloom is celebrating new owners Jarrod and Carrie Hayes; Electric City Logistics, a new business located in Times Square is making shipping more convenient for customers per KRTV; and the Station District Bar and Eatery, on the downtown Great Falls riverfront part of the Station District Lofts – see KRTV.

Our speaker, Nathan Bilyeu, will explain some of the tools other Montana communities have used to create the critical infrastructure needed to support new housing development. 6) Berkshire Hathway Energy (BHE) U.S. Transmission announced it signed an MOU with Grid United for development of the North Plains Connector transmission project. This will further boost energy developments in the Great Falls region by BHE Montana. See Business Wire.


7) Our GFDA Small Business Development Center took multiple calls this week from individuals who are interested in starting a business. Some of the most common questions our Business Advisors are asked relate to getting a business started and identifying the important steps to take to get a business off the ground. To assist more individuals with the basic information, our team created the Idea to Income Training. Our next one takes place on Tuesday, January 14th from 5:30-6:30 PM at the GFDA Office. This training will be facilitated by Christian Nichols, one of our Small Business Development Center Advisors. If you are even thinking about starting a business or are in the first stages of business ownership, we encourage you to attend. 12) Great Falls Tourism held its annual meeting where it presented its 2025 Annual Plan to implement its Strategic Plan. 13) Montana State University researchers have found that replacing summer fallow with a pulse grain crop can increase profits for farmers, even in dry regions; see Hi-Line Today and MSU News Service.


14) Our GFDA Small Business Development Center worked with several clients this week who are either selling or purchasing a business. One of the clients worked on implementing a strategy for increasing better customer base and tracking cost centers prior to selling. Another client identified strategies for increasing profit margins prior to selling. In addition, one client identified two businesses currently for sale that may be viable options and started looking at financial forecasts and exploring options. The Big Sky Film Grant is open and closes Feb. 7, 2025. This grant program aims to build and support partnerships with filmmakers and production companies to create Montana film industry jobs. Up to $1.5 million in awards is available to filmmakers.


Our GFDA Small Business Development Center has been onboarding the Downtown Great Falls Winter Cohort Participants. The Winter Cohort runs January 28th - April 8th. During this three-month period, the Cohort meets every other Tuesday from 8:30-10:00 AM. The group sessions include connection around business topics, business skills trainings and a time for solution think-tanks where the Cohort participants assist fellow small business owners in problem solving while applying skills and strategies. There is no charge to be a part of the Winter Cohort. Cybersecurity is a top priority for the Department of Defense (DoD)! Is your business prepared for the new cybersecurity standards in federal contracting? Our freight logistics consultants, Moffat & Nichols, completed key findings of the Great Falls Region Freight Market Assessment and Economic Development Strategy Recommendations. This comprehensive study offers valuable insights into the logistics industry and its potential in our region. We have already begujn work implementing some of the recommendations. Others will need to wait until we work with our partners to secure more resources. Logistics are a key consideration for existing manufacturers in our region, and in attracting new investment in manufacturing operations.

Cybersecurity challenges for businesses continue to grow. The Montana Manufacturing Extension Center (MMEC) is offering an array of useful resources to help Montana businesses to protect themselves. MMEC has launched the Certified Manufacturing Associate Apprenticeship program. This one-year program combines on-the-job training with online technical classes on safety, math and measurements, manufacturing processes, and quality control.

USDA opened a new round of Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) grants and loans. Rural small businesses and agricultural producers can use the funds to make energy-efficiency improvements, lower operating costs, or install renewable energy systems. Quarterly competitions will be held.
