GFDA has earned the 2024 Platinum Seal of Transparency from Candid, the nation's leading source for information on nonprofit organizations. We continue to be proud of this mark of distinction, putting us at the top of non-profit transparency.

1)  Great Falls Montana Tourism released its new Tourism Master Plan and Strategic Plan; see KRTV. Thank you to the City of Great Falls for allocating ARPA funds for this work. Tourism is an important industry sector in Great Falls and the surrounding trade area with opportunities for growth that creates jobs, builds local wealth, and supports dining, recreation, retail and entertainment businesses for local residents to enjoy.

2) We realize that not every loan request is cookie cutter and sometimes takes multiple solutions to get a project to move forward. This week GFDA approved three different loans for one client that is doing a high mission childcare expansion. These three loans will take the client through multiple steps of the process from purchasing the building, construction and then some permanent working capital. The design of these loans is to provide bridge and gap financing through each different phase to enable the bank partner to be comfortable funding their portion of the project. If you have a project that may need some creative solutions, please reach out to Jill Kohles at [email protected] or 1-406-590-1056 to discus the tools that GFDA has to offer.

3) The Montana's Board of Public Education approved the Great Falls Public Schools' charter school proposal giving the green light for the start of the CORE School this fall. See KRTV. Congratulations to all involved in creating this concept and making it happen!

4) The Great Falls City Commission unanimously approved supporting the nomination of the Baatz Block in Downtown Great Falls to the National Register of Historic Places. The tax credits associated with this designation will help this complex and exciting permanent supportive housing project come to fruition. Read more in the Electric. If you have a complex project in need of support reach out to Jake Clark at 1-406-403-4937 or [email protected]

5) We had a productive Brownfields Kick-off Meeting for our new FY2023 Assessment Grant this past week. It was attended by our Qualified Environmental Professionals (QEPs) Pool and Brownfields Advisory Committee. We went over the grant workplan, roles, confidentiality, and potential project examples. Excited to kick off the projects soon! Are you looking at a site for a business startup or expansion, but aren’t sure if there are potentially hazardous conditions? For more information, contact Christian Nichols at 1-406-788-9385 or [email protected].

6) Congratulations to Great Falls Public Schools for gaining $1m in tax credit donations through the state’s newly expanded program. A special thank you to Anders Blewett for rallying the troops and making this happen! Read The Electric article here.

7) Lillian met with a local business to help prepare for an upcoming federal bid, assisting with SAM registration, guiding the Service-disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) certification application process, and reviewing bid requirements. This should improve the business's chances of success. If you want to improve your business's finances, federal contracts offer significant opportunities and can lead to new projects. If you'd like an introduction to government contracting, reach out to Lillian Sunwall at [email protected] or 1-406-750-1253.

8) Congratulations to Mikayla and Sonny Storms on opening their new embroidery business in Great Falls, Storms Designs; see KRTV. Hobby Time RC has moved into a new space in Great Falls and added an indoor race track; see KRTV. KRTV ran a nice story about new restaurants coming to Great Falls.

9) Focus on Impact then Income, concentrate on making an impact with your clients rather than making income. Review your value proposition, ask yourself what value do I provide to my clients, what problems am I solving? Do this and the income will follow. Learn from your competition. See what they do. Learn from their mistakes. Monitor their reviews online. Imitate what they do best. Want to learn more about how to enhance your business model & value provided or have questions regarding your small business or startup? please reach out to Alan Gohary at [email protected] or 1-406-750-0314.

10) Furthermore, your business's online presence directly impacts how customers see you, your sales levels, and your profits. Analyzing your web pages, social media, reviews and more provides key information to manage your reputation, reach your audience, and optimize success. Investing time to understand and build your digital footprint is essential to accomplish your goals. If you need assistance evaluating your company's digital footprint, contact Rich Gannon at 1-406-836-2078 or [email protected]. The GFDA Small Business Development Center can walk you through the steps of startup or business growth and answer any questions you have regarding your business. Click here to sign up.

11) The Annual Economic Outlook organized by the Bureau of Business & Economic Research at the University of Montana will be held in Great Falls this Wednesday, January 24th at the Meadow Lark Country Club. The featured topic this year is "Implementing the Green Energy Transition in Montana: What Would It Take?" Jolene Schalper, GFDA Senior VP, will give the local update. Register here.

12) In 2023, USDA Rural Development in Montana awarded more than $2.2 million in direct funds to 10 rural small businesses and agricultural producers through its Value-Added Producer Grant (VAPG) program, which is designed to help generate new products, create and expand marketing opportunities, and increase overall producer income to grow local economies in rural and Tribal areas. This grant is now OPEN! If you would like to check the eligibility of your project or learn about trainings, please reach out to Anna at [email protected] or 1-406-590-1301.

13) LOW INTEREST RATE LOAN FUNDS-GOING TO MOVE FAST. GFDA is an approved economic development organization with the State Small Business Credit Initiative 2.0 (SSBCI 2.0) low interest rate program. The state is expecting their third tranche of funding any day now and it is on a first come first served basis. If you have a project that could move forward with the benefit of low interest rate funding start talking with GFDA now. These funds can be used for business purposes including purchasing real estate, equipment or working capital. If you have a business startup or expansion planned that could benefit from a loan participation, contact Jill at [email protected] or 1-406-590-1056.

14) Downtown Great Falls has seen a lot of growth in the past few months with new restaurants and new retail. We've also seen interest from new primary sector businesses. But there is still time to get in on the action, with buildings available to buy and spaces available to lease. If you are interested in a residential project or opening/expanding your business in downtown, call Christian at 1-406-836-0136 or [email protected] to explore the exciting opportunities awaiting you.

15) Please join us in thanking Shane Etzweiler for his years of service at the Great Falls Area Chamber of Commerce. Come enjoy Snacks, a no host bar and enjoy happy hour January 31 from 3-6 PM at Annie’s Tap House

16) Economic development is a collaborative venture. Our investors and public partners are the cornerstone pieces that build the foundation of our shared success. Learn more about them by viewing this short video. Recent investments include: Flagship Division—Great Falls Public Schools; Community Division—Ferrin’s Furniture. They play a pivotal role in advancing our shared objectives. We couldn’t do what we do without their continued support and collaboration. If you’d like to learn more about our economic development strategy and discover ways to engage in the growth of our community, reach out to Investment Director Jenn Gallmeier at 1-406-781-9499 or [email protected].

Let's move more deals and projects forward this week!
