Treasure State Sires hosted a ribbon cutting this week to celebrate the opening of Montana’s first ever boar stud facility. The project was partially funded with a Growth Through Agriculture award assisted by GFDA’s Food Ag Development Center's Director, receiving the maximum funding amount of $150,000. We met with leaders of defense communities across the country, discussed the upcoming Sentinel mission, and learned about new military and community partnerships in a rapidly changing national security threat environment.

13) Applications are currently being accepted for several energy focused programs in our region. Opportunities include competitively awarded low interest loans from the Montana Department of Environmental Quality for qualifying upgrades or conservation measures. Businesses in North Central Montana will have scoring advantages, applications due Jan 31, 2026. Grant money available from NorthWestern Energy for energy installations on nonprofit, government, and public buildings, applications due May 1, 2026. US Department of Agriculture Rural Energy for America program supports agricultural producers and small rural businesses in installing renewable energy systems or making energy efficiency improvements. Resources include grants and guaranteed loans, applications due December 31, 2025. Matching funds from Montana Department of Environmental Quality to replace older diesel trucks, buses, garbage trucks, street sweepers, or airport ground support vehicles, applications due December 5, 2025.


14) Businesses across our region are fueling economic growth, securing more than $7.5 million in government contracts during the month of October. Great Falls Regional APEX advised 12 businesses as they prepared to compete in the government marketplace. 16) Shauni held an introductory call with an out-of-market business in the tourism and recreation industry that has expressed interest in our region. The company currently operates in two major metropolitan areas within Montana, and future meetings are scheduled to continue the conversation. 18) The Montana Department of Commerce is accepting applications for the Montana Coal Endowment Planning Grant Program. The application is available on the grants and loans portal until December 1. For the 2027 biennium only, communities may be awarded one planning grant of up to $30,000 for a variety of infrastructure preliminary engineering reports and capital improvement plans. 19) Downtown Great Falls will celebrate Ladies’ Night Out on Thursday, November 20, from 5:00–8:00 PM, with participating restaurants extending the fun through dinner and cocktails until 10:00 PM. This signature downtown event invites residents and visitors to enjoy an evening of shopping, dining, and community spirit—no tickets required. Retailers and restaurants will offer extended hours, exclusive promotions, and festive experiences that highlight the vibrant downtown scene and kick off the holiday season in style. 20) The Tribal Tourism Grant Programs are open now through November 30, offering funding for both shovel-ready tribal tourism projects (up to $50,000) and small businesses (up to $10,000) in areas like Native American Made in Montana retail, food and beverage, guiding, and hosted experiences. 21) Beginning November 10, the Department of Defense (DoD) will require contractors to meet cybersecurity standards under the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) program. These requirements apply only to DoD contracts, not all federal opportunities. The rule, outlined in DFARS 252.204-7021 and published in the Federal Register, aims to protect government data and strengthen the defense supply chain. Businesses should review their cybersecurity practices now to stay eligible for future Department of Defense (DoD) contracts. Now is the time to prepare. 27) We encourage you to take advantage of the Innovative Educational Program Tax Credit to make a direct and lasting impact on education in Great Falls. Montana’s Innovative Educational Program Tax Credit allows you to redirect a portion of your state income taxes directly to Great Falls Public Schools, enhancing innovative programs and opportunities for our students. Thanks to the generosity of our community, Great Falls has led the state for two consecutive years—securing nearly $1 million in tax credits last year alone. Together, community members like you have already invested over $2.1 million through this new program. These funds have been used to establish the new GFPS Innovative Learning Center opening in 2026, expand summer learning, and provide mental health support for students. This year, contributions will help restore and begin to sustain field trips/investigations for more than 800 elementary students and expand STEM learning for all K–12 students. By participating before the statewide opening on January 21, 2026, you will receive a dollar-for-dollar tax credit on your 2025 Montana income tax return. Timing is critical—credits are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, and have been claimed in under ten minutes in past years. Montana Department of Agriculture’s Growth Through Agriculture (GTA) program is now accepting pre-applications! To be invited to submit a full application, candidates should upload a project summary and budget projections through the Webgrants online portal by November 10. Grants up to $50,000 and loans up to $100,000 are available, for a maximum possible award of $150,000. A dollar-for-dollar match is required for all funded projects. The Montana Department of Environmental Quality (MT DEQ) announced a new funding opportunity to help curb transportation sector nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. The Clean Truck, Bus & Airport Equipment Program matches funds to replace older diesel trucks, buses or airport ground support vehicles with battery electric, alternate fuel or newer diesel vehicles. Examples of vehicles eligible to receive funding through this opportunity include garbage trucks​, school buses, street sweepers, bucket trucks, buses​ or equipment that service aircraft between flights. This funding opportunity is similar to ones announced in 2021 and 2024 that successfully funded the first electric school buses and electric street sweepers in Montana. For school districts considering purchasing an electric school bus, the Montana Electric School Bus Technical Assistance Report provides information on actual fuel costs, maintenance issues and performance of electric buses operating in Montana.



Fall proposals for Universal System Benefits (USB) funding available through NorthWestern Energy opens on November 1. This program offers a limited amount of funding for renewable energy installations on nonprofit, government, and public buildings. Our freight logistics consultants, Moffat & Nichols, completed key findings of the Great Falls Region Freight Market Assessment and Economic Development Strategy Recommendations. This comprehensive study offers valuable insights into the logistics industry and its potential in our region. We have already begujn work implementing some of the recommendations. Others will need to wait until we work with our partners to secure more resources. Logistics are a key consideration for existing manufacturers in our region, and in attracting new investment in manufacturing operations.

Cybersecurity challenges for businesses continue to grow. The Montana Manufacturing Extension Center (MMEC) is offering an array of useful resources to help Montana businesses to protect themselves. MMEC has launched the Certified Manufacturing Associate Apprenticeship program. This one-year program combines on-the-job training with online technical classes on safety, math and measurements, manufacturing processes, and quality control.


Zero to 5 has launched the Montana Child Care Business Connect website to help support the startup and expansion of early childcare businesses. The Great Falls Childcare Demand Assessment shows a need for additional childcare facilities to serve 580 children in Great Falls.
