Great Falls College-MSU's faculty, moderators, and business advisors team for the Montana Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses at their recent kick-off training orientation in Great Falls. The Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program teamed up with Great Falls College-MSU to offer entrepreneurs in the State of Montana a free, practical business training program and personalized support services to help grow their business. It's great to have this new entrepreneur resource partner!

1) Governor Gianforte signed House Bill 245 that removed the sunset on Montana's unique expanded Medicaid program. The GFDA Board endorsed this policy effort along with thee Great Falls Area Chamber of Commerce, Montana Chamber and many partners. Thank you to Rep. 3) Congratulations to the C.M. Russell Museum on over $9 million in sales at The Russell art auction, held March 20–22 in Great Falls, the star of Western Art Week. 4) Christian Leinhauser and Kristen Blue hosted a productive site visit with a growing renewable energy company that incorporates value-added agriculture into its operations. 5) Montana was ranked among the Top 5 Least Expensive States to Start a Business in 2025 and named the 4th best state with the fewest regulations, according to SimplifyLLC. 6) Fast financing isn’t always the best financing. This week, the GFDA Small Business Development Center worked with a client who was able to get quick approval on equipment financing from an online lender -but the business owner wasn’t sure of the full terms. Business Advisor Rich Gannon helped them figure out that the 5-year loan had an APR of almost 34%. We are working with the client to seek other funding options. Our Small Business Development Advisors can assist you in financial forecasting, profit/loss statements, business plans, marketing plans and more. 7) The Montana Department of Commerce announced three tribes in our region will share more than $122,000 of grant funding to develop, expand and strengthen local tribal tourism assets and economies. The grant funding is provided through Commerce’s Tribal Tourism Grant Program. Chippewa Cree Tribes of Rocky Boy’s will receive $50,000 for the Rocky Boy Rodeo Enhancement Project in Box Elder. Fort Belknap Indian Community will receive $40,301 for repairs and upgrades to the Aaniih Nakoda Tours vacation rental property in Harlem. Little Shell Tribe of Chippewa Indians will receive $32,350 for the Little Shell Pow Wow Arbor vendor and venue additions on Mount Royal in Great Falls. Congratulations!

9) Great Falls has been named one of the top 10 places to retire in the Western United States by Travel + Leisure magazine!

10) This week our Great Falls Regional APEX assisted 12 small business, one of which we assisted in successfully uploading their CMMC Level 1 self-assessment score into the Supplier Performance Risk System (SPRS), ensuring compliance with Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) Level 1 requirements. Cybersecurity is a top priority for the Department of Defense (DoD), and businesses involved in federal contracting must comply with new standards. Under Federal Acquisition Regulation FAR 52.204-21, “Basic Safeguarding of Covered Contractor Information Systems,” companies handling Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) or Federal Contract Information (FCI) must meet specific security measures. At a minimum, businesses must obtain CMMC Level 1 to ensure they are safeguarding sensitive data. 15) Jake testified in support of two new developments proposed for Great Falls at neighborhood council, one single family home development and a mixed-use development. We often attend neighborhood council meetings to hear concerns from the neighbors when new developments are proposed, as well as to advocate for new projects. 16) We were asked to participate in an SBDC Leadership Manufacturing RoundTable to share the insights we've gained working with area manufacturers. 17) What does it take to build a thriving downtown entrepreneurial ecosystem? Downtown Great Falls Association and the Business Improvement District hosted a Main Street America workshop regarding building an entrepreneurial ecosystem. Discussion surrounded uses for vacant space, resource sharing, new development, and more.

19) I participated in the ICSC DC Fly-in, networking with commercial real estate leaders and meeting with Montana Congressional staff to discuss important tax policy issues that affect the viability of new construction and redevelopment projects. I serve as the volunteer ICSC Government Relations Chair. In 2023, Montana had 130 commercial marketplaces with 5,508 tenants and 120,764 jobs (16% of the state total jobs). These marketplaces paid $111.6 million in Montana property taxes in 2023 and invested $180 million in construction and redevelopment.


20) I also participated a board meeting of the Montana Infrastructure Coalition, discussing critical infrastructure policy issues that affect our region, and a board meeting of a new Montana energy transmission business advocacy organizing that we are helping to form.

Our freight logistics consultants, Moffat & Nichols, completed key findings of the Great Falls Region Freight Market Assessment and Economic Development Strategy Recommendations. This comprehensive study offers valuable insights into the logistics industry and its potential in our region. We have already begujn work implementing some of the recommendations. Others will need to wait until we work with our partners to secure more resources. Logistics are a key consideration for existing manufacturers in our region, and in attracting new investment in manufacturing operations.

Cybersecurity challenges for businesses continue to grow. The Montana Manufacturing Extension Center (MMEC) is offering an array of useful resources to help Montana businesses to protect themselves. MMEC has launched the Certified Manufacturing Associate Apprenticeship program. This one-year program combines on-the-job training with online technical classes on safety, math and measurements, manufacturing processes, and quality control.
