Letter From The Editor

Good Morning Clubwomen of Florida:

I hope this edition finds you doing well and COVID-free.  There has been another spike in the numbers testing positive, so please continue to practice safety protocols, especially when on travel.

Thank you to all the clubs submitting articles and information to produce this newsletter.  Please remember to submit one picture per article.  Multiple photos need to be submitted in a photo collage.

This morning's edition includes GFWC Florida Clubwoman Pioneers submissions, which will run through August, to ensure all bios are published.  Also, the answers to last weeks trivia.  Please send your article/information by 11:59 pm EST on Wednesdays of every week to be published in the upcoming edition. Articles received after Wednesday will get published in the next edition. Thank you so much for your understanding and cooperation.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the one-question poll that was in last Monday's edition. Your feedback is essential for the success of the Clubwoman. There will be future polls published once a month.  How else will I know if you are reading this communication? (smile)

If you have any questions or concerns related to the Clubwoman Newsletter, please do not hesitate to contact me at clubwomaneditor@gfwcflorida.org. I will respond within 48 hours or less.

See you next Monday…same time, same club channel (smile).

***CORRECTIONS ALERT***

The following information are corrections from the previous editions:

  • North Pinellas Woman’s Club is located in District 14, https://gfwcnpwc.org/
  • Santa Rosa Woman's Club is located in District 1, www.santarosawomansclub.org
  • Shannon Bailey, GFWC Director-Elect of Junior Clubs

President's Project

Camp Boggy Creek

BOGGY BEARS

PROJECT ACTIVITY ALERT: Did you know campers and families go home with a hand-made Boggy Bear stitched with love each session? Because the Camp gives them away each session, having volunteers make Boggy Bears is a top need. When making Boggy Bears, please use the standard pattern. It is a difficult pattern, so sewing Boggy Bears is not for everyone. You can still help in the “build a Boggy Bear” process if you do not sew. For instance, the pattern has to be laid onto the fabric and cut. Not a cutter, no problem; the bears aren’t complete until they are stuffed. Make a day of bear-building with your club members. Click here to view and print the bear pattern.

District 3 Director Susan McLeod shared the bottom two pictures. It was her first time building a bear. She stated it took about 5 hours to complete. "Inserting the legs and arms is a tight fit, and stuffing is a major job."

GFWC Florida Clubwomen Pioneers

We want to highlight Clubwomen who are Pioneers:

Do you know who they are? Are they the first in their family, race, or culture to do or create something in STEM, literature, art, or any other field?  Are they the founder of a club, non-profit, or business? Do they own a patent? Share their info at clubwomaneditor@gfwcflorida.org and let us shine the light on them.

We will run the highlights every edition through August.  Kudos to all GFWC Florida Clubwoman Pioneers…Thank You for your service and for paving the way for others!

Do you know that the GFWC Florida Communications & Public Relations Committee Chair and District 1 President’s Project Chair, Deb Lubas is a Pioneer? She is a Patent Co-author for Software that Synthesizes Undersea Biologics. With her Ph.D. research at Naval Post Graduate School, she has authored and published numerous software, system, and reliability engineering articles through highly renowned international engineering magazines, conferences, standards, and handbooks.

Deb is the GFWC Florida North West Florida Service Group President located in District 1. She is a Carnegie Mellon University Teaching Excellence Award recipient and an accomplished Undersea Videographer.

Deb Lubas joined the GFWC in 2018.

Dr. Elizabeth Mazzio has over 12 years of formal educational training in Nutrition and Food Science and 25+ years in lab research at Florida A&M University, College of Pharmacy pertaining to nutraceutical properties of natural products on various biological systems, primarily focused on prevention of age-related neurodegeneration and cancer. She is the developer and owner of six (6) Research Patents.

Elizabeth founded a small lab in Gadsden County to make compounding nutraceuticals and learn about cGMP practices and FDA regulations to layout operations for formations and manufacturing. With the nutraceutical business overwhelming consumers with brands, formulations, and individual nutrients, the goal of Histone Nutrition Labs was to eliminate the bottles and create six all-in-one formulations to cover: organs (pancreas, blood glucose control, liver, gut, gall bladder, thyroid), cardiovascular, immune, cancer prevention, joint, and neurological pain, and prevention against age-related brain neurodegeneration. The combined formulations are made to blend together, also distributing vitamins, minerals, and electrolytes in perfect balance. The company is still new but is environmentally conscious, having developed and trademarked vitamins in a box ™ to eliminate Nutraceuticals being packed in plastic bottles. Dr. Mazzio and a team of professors at Florida A&M University have founded Sunshine State Foam to provide solutions to businesses across Florida for compaction, recycling, and redistribution of polystyrene packing foam into new materials. Sunshine State Foam is also an educational and outreach mechanism for all types of recycling.

As a free service to assist members of GFWC Florida with questions regarding nutrition, vitamin supplements, and Neutraceuticals, Liz created “Ask Dr. Mazzio.” If you have any nutrition or health-related questions, feel free to contact askdrmazzio@gmail.com, and she will answer questions every weekend.

Liz has been a member of GFWC since 2018, when she joined the Junior Woman’s Club of Midtown. She is a Charter Member and Health and Wellness Committee Chair of the Sisters of Service Woman’s Club. Both clubs are located in District 3.

Rita Bertler, President and Founder of Dollars for Mammograms, Inc. is a proud GFWC Rotonda West Woman’s Club member in District 12.

Rita was selected as a “Maker 2014” by Public Broadcasting WGCU for making a difference in women's lives in Southwest Florida. It was an honor, and the first time someone in the Englewood area was selected by Gulf Coast University’s public broadcasting station.

Rita founded Dollars for Mammograms, Inc. in May of 2000 and is always eager to share the story of this “no cost” mammogram service to anyone who cannot afford one. Rita’s motivation to establish Dollars for Mammograms was driven by her desire that no other woman feel as she did when she found she had a breast health issue, was uninsured, and did not know where to turn for help.

Rita encourages everyone she meets to follow her mantra: “Let your light shine brightly!” By this, she means; do not be afraid of challenges, be true to yourself and your goals. Do not compromise your integrity or yourself to further your career goals.

-Living The Volunteer Spirit-

On July 5th, the Coral Gables Woman’s Club held its monthly Gringo Bingo at Clutch Burger with approximately 40 attendees. There were first-timers, and some of our loyal participants were in attendance with much fun!   Half of the money raised is designated for Campy Boggy Creek, the current GFWC President’s Project.  The other half goes to the club’s dental clinic. The club also took this opportunity to present a check for $1,000 as seed money to the newest club in District 11, The Woman’s Club of Historic Overtown, Inc. There to accept the donation were president Lavette Moore and Vice President Dr. Anita Jones.  The club looks forward to collaborating on many activities with our new sister club. Best of luck to them as they begin this new journey!

ENVIRONMENT

If you eat fruit, don't throw seeds and kernels in the trash. Wash and dry them, put them in a box, and put it in the car. When you're on the road, throw them through the window in places where there are no trees. Nature itself will take care of them. Or throw it out during a walk or bike ride. This practice has been around for centuries in Asian countries. That is why their fruits are now growing everywhere.

Hello all, those who REQUESTED a vote-by-mail ballot can expect delivery next week! Still, time to request one if you want. You don't have to use it if you change your mind. You can vote during Early Voting or on Election Day, and the poll worker inspector will cancel your vote-by-mail at check-in and give you a ballot to feed the machine! If you use your VBM, make sure to mail it in within 10 days to get to the Elections Office, or drop it off at the Elections Office or an Early Voting site when they are open. Please DO NOT take it to an Election Day polling location...that will NOT be accepted at that site, but you can drop it at the Elections Office by 7 pm on Election Day. (Once your VBM is received and processed, you immediately get credit for voting), you cannot vote twice! One way cancels the other.
