OWNERSHIP
OFFER SOLUTIONS
1.5 min. read
To take ownership at work means to take initiative and be proactive in your role, understanding the purpose of your job duties in achieving larger organizational goals. Another way to define this concept is to hold yourself accountable for your work, regardless of the outcome, and demonstrate a genuine interest in contributing to the success of your organization.
Remember-- we win TOGETHER.
Recently we went through various strategies for taking ownership. This week, let's unpack the second one, OFFERING SOLUTIONS. (See the first one, BEING PROACTIVE by clicking HERE).
When taking ownership of your work, offering solutions is more effective than presenting problems. Below are some steps to develop your problem-solving skills.
1 – Identify the problem. This is where you explain the problem situation. Keep asking “Why?” to continue diving deeper to discover the root cause of the problem.
2 – Develop potential solutions. Brainstorm all possible solutions. Depending on the complexity of the problem, it may be important to collaborate with others to offer more ideas.
3 – Analyze solutions. Which solution makes the most sense based on your constraints, such as budget, personnel resources, and time? This is an excellent opportunity to write it down and create a table that lists each solution and each criterion with check marks or brief comments to rate each solution against all the various criteria.
4 – Recommend the best solution. Based on your evaluation, choose the best solution and why it makes the most sense. Then, meet with your supervisor. Putting your information into concise formatting makes it easier when you meet to discuss your ideas.
Going through this process isn’t always easy, but by following these steps, the process will become ingrained in your brain and, over time, you’ll be able to think through these steps quickly and easily.
