Message From Our PTA Presidents

Hi GHS community,

We've made our way through a third of the year! This past month, we analyzed the feedback we received through the staff/family surveys, hosted dinner for our teachers, supported food and holiday needs of our members, and completed our first community conversation. Alongside you all, we also learned a lot through parent-teacher conferences and now are getting ready to embark on a restorative winter break.

We look forward to hitting the ground running in January with continuing our Parent Education Series, hosting our first GHE Lunar New Year celebration, our second general membership meeting, and our first Art Walk on February 9th!

As we reflect on these past months, we'd like to thank all of you who have volunteered your time, energy, and support inside and outside of the classroom. Whether sending us an email to increase awareness of an issue, being a teacher who advocated at one of our meetings, or being a room parent with feet on the ground, each moment of engagement matters to strengthening this community.

As leadership, we remain committed to being your PTA. Being open and transparent is a large component of the culture of belonging we'd like to foster. We have had numerous conversations over the past month with you, with building leadership, and with staff. One common theme in all those conversations is about strengthening our community and connection to each other.

Which leads to a question we pose to you? What kind of culture do we want to have at GHE and how can we build it? One change you'll see at our January 17th General Membership Meeting is building more space for us to talk with one another. We hope to create more moments to connect, build trust, and work together. We are very much looking forward to seeing you all there.

Wishing you each a warm, healthy, and happy holidays.

Sincerely,

Lia, Michael, and your PTA Board

Viral Justice: How We Grow the World We Want

January 10, 2023 7:30 pm

UW Kane Hall, Room 120

Registration opens on December 13th

In this talk, Ruha Benjamin introduces a microvision of change -- a way of looking at the everyday ways people are working to combat unjust systems and build alternatives to the oppressive status quo. Born of a stubborn hopefulness and grounded in social analysis, she offers a pragmatic and poetic approach to fostering a more just and joyful world.

We need your help!

The PTA is made up of volunteers and all events are run by volunteers. There are many options to be involved at GHE!

GHE Volunteer Information

Equity Committee Sign-Ups

It's that time again to start planning our big winter events! Here's what's on the calendar:

Lunar New Year Celebration, Jan. 27 (Food, activities, education, and lion dancers!)

  • Black Lives Matter at School Week, Jan. 29 - Feb. 3
  • Unity Night, early March (In-person again! Showcasing student work with a potluck.)

We're forming planning committees for each event, so please join us by signing up here! The success of these events has always relied on our robust volunteer group and we need at least a few people on each committee to be sure we have diverse voices included in the planning. Being on an event committee will involve a meeting or two and likely heading up one aspect of the event. In particular, our Lunar New Year lead, Liyun Cecil, is looking for other families who celebrate Lunar New Year to add to the cultural representation she brings with her Taiwanese background. We hope that the cultures of all Genesee families who celebrate can be represented at the event. Please also consider joining the BLM at School week committee to make sure we have a meaningful event!

In addition to event committees, we are also forming a committee to develop a bias-incident response and tracking system at Genesee. This is exciting, ground-breaking work, so please join us by signing up at the above link!

Grown-Up Night Out

Please save the date of Sat, March 25, 2023 for our annual Genesee Hill Spring Event! We will return to pre-COVID attendance, with a totally awesome night of entertainment, mystery, and building community with adult families and friends of GHE. This event will be an opportunity to join together for a fun night out, and raise money for some exciting one-time projects that Teachers, Staff, and Students would love to have at the school. All the details to follow soon!

Volunteers Needed:

We need a lot of volunteers for before, during and after the event. Keep an eye out for links to join our team of volunteers in a big or small way and anywhere in between to be a part of the fun event. Or contact volunteers@geneseehillpta.org if you want to start contributing right away.
