LETTER FROM OUR HEADMASTER Greetings Spartan families, I wanted to share briefly about the upcoming Independent Study days, January 21-23. This is a great tradition for Great Hearts academies in both states. Across the K-12 grades, students are given various assignments, based on the curriculum, to work on independently. Projects vary across campuses and grade levels: poetry memorization/recitation, building scale models of medieval castles, historical research projects, reading texts for seminar discussions, creating historical timelines, researching countries and animals, etc. For this year, assignment sheets have gone out, and some of you have already started brainstorming ideas and purchasing any needed materials. This is an exciting time on campus as well, as students are sharing with each other the ideas they have for their projects. The Independent Study culminates on Friday 1/24, when students will present their projects to their classmates. This year we will be hosting an open house in the MPR for families to come and see their hard work. The schedule will be as follows: 8:00-8:45: Fifth and Sixth Grade 9:15-10:00: Kindergarten 10:30-11:15: First Grade 11:45-12:30: Fourth Grade 1:00-1:45: Third Grade 2:15-3:00: Second Grade Please encourage your students to do their best, and allow them the pleasure of completing a challenging project on their own. We appreciate all the moral support and guidance you will offer, but as tempting as it is, please don’t complete the project for them. Thank you all for your continued support of the academy, and I look forward to you seeing your students grow through this assignment and show pride in their good work. INDEPENDENT STUDY WEEK  SAVE THE DATE: JANUARY 24 - INDEPENDENT STUDY OPEN HOUSE! (See schedule in Headmaster Vlahovich's letter above) Students will receive their Independent Study Project this week. Great Heats Western Hills has set aside 3 days (following the Martin Luther King, Jr. observance day) for students to work on this project. It is important that parents do not do the project, rather allow the student to take the reins and parents offer supervision as needed.  Independent Study projects count for a  major test   grade. Students are required to present their project on Friday, January 24. This cannot be rescheduled.
