Letter from our Headmaster

Below is another quote from the book, “The Good News About Bad Behavior” by Katherine Reynolds Lewis.
In sailing, you cannot head straight to your destination. You must harness the power of the wind against your sails in order to chart a course that slants across the direct line to your goal, at as small an angle as possible. When that puff of air runs out, you switch sides, tilting the other side of your boat toward your target. You continue “tacking,” switching back and forth, as you head toward your goal at an angle. The boat takes a zigzag part as you come ever closer to your objective.

Sometimes the wind dies and you drift along, seeming to make no progress. If you get impatient and try to point the boat more squarely toward your destination, your sails will flap and you will grind to a halt.

Parenting is similar. There simply is no shortcut to the long process of children learning from life, with your loving guidance. As much as we’d like to extract the hard-won knowledge in our brains and implant it into theirs, they must experience life for themselves. They must draw their own conclusions.

Our job is to cheer them on when they succeed, and catch them when they fall. And to pray for a strong offshore breeze that will speed the sailboat along.

Best,
Matthew Vlahovich
Headmaster
Fine Arts Recital & Concert Reminder

3rd-6th Graders are required to wear concert attire for the Winter Concert held on Friday, November 22. Participation in the concert by the 3rd-6th graders counts for 30% of your scholar's music grade. (K, 1st & 2nd on campus winter recitals will wear their regular school uniforms.)

Scholars are only required to attend on their individual grade level designated days:

  • Tuesday, November 19, 4:15 PM, Kinder Winter Recital @ GHWH MPR
  • Wednesday, November 20, 4:15 PM, 1st Grade Winter Recital @ GHWH MPR
  • Thursday, November 21, 4:15 PM, 2nd Grade Winter Recital @ GHWH MPR
  • Friday, November 22, 6 PM (5:30 PM Student call back), Winter Concert for 3rd-6th grades @ SAC, McAllister Fine Arts Center

After School Clubs are cancelled for Tuesday, November 19, Wednesday, November 20, Thursday, November 21 because of the Fine Arts events on campus during these days.

Also, there will be no walk up pick up during these day either to accommodate the recitals .
In order to facilitate the winter music recitals, there will be no walk up pick up on Tuesday, November 19, Wednesday, November 20 & Thursday, November 21 . All scholars not performing on their specified grade level day, must be picked up through the car line. (This includes siblings of those performing.) After car line is completed, we will then open the doors to allow parents and siblings on campus to attend their child's performance.

Car Placards Required EVERY DAY for Pick Up

Reminder: Parents must show placards in order to pick up scholars each and every day. Please make sure they are visible. We have way too many are coming in daily without it and we cannot release any scholars without a placard.
Dress Code Update

GHWH has updated our uniform dress code to i nclude long-sleeved Peter Pan collared blouses for girls to wear under the K-2nd grade jumper. Peter Pan shirts do not have a required vendor as they do not have our GH logo on them. Please ensure the Peter Pan shirts that are purchased have rounded (not scalloped) collars.
Cold Weather Guidelines

The following information was provided from district office with regards to cold weather guidelines. Please adhere to these when taking scholars out during PE and/or recess.

A suggested temperature for allowing students to go outside for recess and/or physical education is 40 degrees or above. However, good judgment should be used if there is a wind chill factor.

Wind-Chill Factor Chart (in Fahrenheit)
  • Keep in mind that air temperature and wind speed combined will determine the length of outdoor play during cold conditions.
  • Students should be dressed properly
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED THIS WEEK!
If you find you have an hour or two on any particular day, feel free to stop by the school! We always have ways parents can participate and help grow the Great Hearts Western Hills community! GHWH now has a PSO Volunteer Coordinator, Mrs. Cassi Diaz, to help us coordinate the many needs/efforts on campus. We are grateful to her for stepping up and helping GHWH! Please keep an eye out for communication from her from time to time. If you'd like to get plugged in, sign up to volunteer. Since we do not use front desk volunteers this year, we have updated the volunteer dress code to allow for jeans. We'd definitely want all parents to feel welcome to participate in helping our scholars.

Please remember to relay any planned absences to your student's teacher. For all other questions or concerns related to absences (that cannot be addressed by your teacher directly), send an email directly to: [email protected]   .

Please turn in all sick or doctor notes within 2 days of the absence   . Written documentation must be provided for ALL days your student is absent from school. Acceptable forms of written documentation include email, handwritten letter, or doctor's note.

Tardy Policy - Please Discuss the Following with your Child/Children :
As a reminder, any scholar who is not in their seat at 7:50 AM will be counted “Tardy”. Often times scholars will stop for bathroom breaks, getting water, etc. This can often prohibit your scholar from arriving to their class on time. Please ensure that you are arriving to campus with ample time for your scholar to make it inside the building and into their classroom prior to the 7:50 Attendance Submission.
