Letter from our Headmaster

Greetings Spartan Families

The past quarter and a half, our students have worked hard. And now it’s time to let your children play… let them sleep in, run around, play in the backyard, build forts, and grow bored listening to grandparents tell familiar stories… all of these are good things, and I hope that you and your family have a very restful Thanksgiving break. Here’s some food for thought around the idea of play:

It may seem trivial to be concerned about child’s play. Aren’t there more pressing dangers confronting modern children?

But play isn’t minor at all. For decades, child development researchers have amassed evidence that play is a crucial building block in children’s growth, helping them develop abstract thought, self-control, social cooperation, and other essential skills…

Games also help kids develop self-regulation. Both the inherent fun and the social pressure to keep a game going give children strong incentives to control their actions. If a child pushes and shoves, their peers may refuse to play with them again, or they may hit back. This reaction gives the disruptive child a powerful reason to override the urge to last out – stronger motivation than if an adult intervened. By practicing self-control in play, they gain greater impulse control in other areas of life.

Venue Change for 3rd-6th grade concert on Friday, 11/22

The campus received some concerns from parents regarding the distance of the SAC venue for the concert. As a result, we were able to secure a closer, larger venue at the Edgewood Theatre of Performing Arts @ 402 Lance St, San Antonio, TX 78237.
Details are below:
  • 5:30 - Student call back (please arrive on time)
  • 6:00 - Third grade recital begins (followed by fourth, fifth and sixth grade)
  • As a reminder, dress code for scholars is as follows; Boys will wear black dress pants, white dress shirt, black necktie, black dress socks, and black dress shoes. Girls will wear black modest-length dress or skirt, white blouse/top/cardigan (no spaghetti-straps), and black dress shoes or dress sandals (no flip-flops).
  • Participation in the concert by the 3rd-6th graders counts for 30% of your scholar's music grade

Fine Arts Recital Reminder for K-2

Lower grade level scholars are only required to attend on their individual grade level designated day as shown below:

  • Tuesday, November 19, 4:15 PM, Kinder Winter Recital @ GHWH MPR
  • Wednesday, November 20, 4:15 PM, 1st Grade Winter Recital @ GHWH MPR
  • Thursday, November 21, 4:15 PM, 2nd Grade Winter Recital @ GHWH MPR

Parents will line up for these recitals on the side of the campus, closest to Midhurst. There will be signs available to help with logistics. The entrance to these recitals will be through the side door of the MPR.

Petco has graciously allowed us to use their parking lot on recital days. However, please only use the parking spots that are along Ingram Road.

Note the following changes on 11/19 - 11/21 due to the campus recitals scheduled:
  1. There will not be after school clubs held.
  2. There will be no walk up pick up at release time. All scholars not performing on their specified grade level day, must be picked up through the car line. (This includes siblings of those performing.) After car line is completed, we will then open the doors to allow parents and siblings on campus to attend their child's performance.
No pets allowed (unless service animals)
We have many scholars who are allergic to pets, and/or there are some animals who are not very fond of little hands walking up and petting them.
Also, we have had a handful of parents bring pets during walk up pick up and do not pick up after them.
Please ensure you keep pets at home during pick up - unless they are service animals. There are no exceptions to this policy.
REMINDER:
Our campus policy for walk-up pickup does not allow for cars to park in the turnaround area in front of the campus. This poses a threat to the safety of our scholars walking back and forth with parents as well as prohibits cars from turning around safely in the turnabout.
The only cars allowed to pull up to the curb for pick up are those that have been provided a pink car placard for students with special circumstances.

Lots of lost items!
Our lost and found stash is over flowing with items. Our campus receptionist and volunteers return labeled items regularly, however there are many unlabeled items. In order to make additional room, we will be donating all items during the thanksgiving break. Please take a look if you're missing anything prior to then!
Open Enrollment in progress!
Share the news with your friends and family. They can enroll new scholars through December 13, 2019.

Apply through this link .

(Re-enrollment for current GHWH scholars is March 2020.)
Picture retakes
