GIMSPP June Newsletter

If you have received your match information and the preceptor’s contact information, be sure to reach out to them and their office by phone/email now if you haven't already done so. There may be additional paperwork necessary before you begin your preceptorship, and you may need several weeks to process before you begin.

We are still working on matching as many students as we can for the summer. If the availability you gave to the program with your application is approaching and you wish to expand it to include later dates in the summer, please email Alyssa@aminc.org as soon as possible.

This is a reminder that if you wish to withdraw from GIMSPP you need to notify GIMSPP program manager as soon as possible to be removed from the matching process.  Please note that withdrawing at the last-minute impacts many people. Please be considerate of everyone who works to make this opportunity possible by communicating promptly.

Started Your Match?

Don't Forget to Submit Your #MentorMonday Pictures!

The goal of the campaign is to show what being in a preceptorship really looks like in a more personal and relatable way and it gives you a chance to show off how much you are accomplishing together!

Project Name: #MentorMonday

Project Description: Use the TXACP social media pages to post at least 1-2 images and captions illustrating a day in the life of a GIMSPP mentor and student.

Logistics: Take 1-2 pictures together and write short 2-3 sentence captions for each photo. These photos should be both personal and professional in nature. Good things to post could be a mentor/student selfie, teaching a student how to perform a task, the two of you outside of the office at lunch or an event in town. These photos and captions should be emailed to me, and I will schedule them to run on the Texas Chapter of the American College of Physicians social media

Important: We will build out and schedule the posts. You only need to send the pictures and captions! Do not include any photos that would show a patient or their protected health information.

When you send us your photos, you will be entered into a drawing for a $50 Amazon Gift Card. We will draw the winners July 1st, 2025 and August 1st, 2025. We will notify you via email if you are the winner with further instructions on how to claim your prize after the drawing.

You can start sending pictures anytime throughout the preceptorship. Please number the photos and submit them as a .jpg or .jpeg to alyssa@aminc.org. The captions should be sent in the body of the email, or in a separate Word document, and should be numbered to correspond with their respective photo.

Tips for GIMSPP Success

Don't Underestimate Your Abilities. It isn't uncommon for students to say that the more they experience, the more they realize how little they know. Don't forget that in reality, you actually know a lot. Students are an integral part of the medical education process and you also make major contributions to patient care and patient care teams.

Don't Overestimate your Abilities. Many medical students will feel that in order to be successful, they need to always have the correct answer or never ask for help. You should avoid this approach as it can be a great hindrance when learning clinical medicine.

Build Your Professional Identity. Many of the clinical and professional experiences you will have in GIMSPP will stay with you forever. Take this time to reflect on your preceptor's relationship with his/her patients and staff - and identify the traits that make them a good doctor.

Increase Your Chance to Match by

Recruiting Your Own Preceptor!

Recruiting your own preceptor allows you more control over the location of your preceptorship and expedites your GIMSPP match timeline. If you know an eligible internal medicine physician who you want to work with, simply let the GIMSPP office know.

The process:

  • Start by looking for local clinics and hospitals in your area
  • You can use the following email template created by GIMSPP to reach out to the physician. Often times the office administrator is the go-to when trying to contact.
  • The preceptor must complete the availability form.
  • GIMSPP staff confirm the preceptor meets the eligibility requirements.
  • GIMSPP staff will reach out to the preceptor to confirm their participation.
  • Once we receive approval from the physician, you will receive a Match Confirmation email. This email will include the selected preceptor’s name and location for you to approve.
  • Once you confirm the match, a Finalization email will be sent to you and the preceptor to exchange contact information and give you next steps.

Reach out to your preceptor and/or their staff find out your schedule, any paperwork and training requirements, and get to just know your preceptor!
