NORTHERN ILLINOIS HOCKEY LEAGUE TO HAVE GIRLS DIVISIONS ONCE AGAIN!
After a successful 2015-16 season, NIHL again will have girls only divisions at 10U, 12U, 14U, and 16/19U. After an inaugural year with a 10U age group, the numbers look strong to have that division again and expand it beyond the 6 teams that participated last year. NIHL preliminary numbers for 12U, 14U, and 16/19U all look quite solid as well with double digit team counts. The exciting news for NIHL is the inclusion of several new teams such as the Vipers (Gurnee), Central Illinois All-Girls Hockey Association, and teams from St. Louis as well. Questions? Please reach out to NIHL Girls Director, Ruben Medina at medina21@comcast.net.

GIRLS' HOCKEY ACROSS AMERICA
WELL-ROUNDED APPROACH BUILDS WINNERS IN COLORADO SPRINGS
By Mike Scandura  ~  There's no doubt that girls in the Colorado Springs Amateur Hockey Association love to play, but playing hockey 365 days a year is too much for anyone.  "We want to develop amazing athletes who have a passion for hockey," said CSAHA Executive Director Brian Copeland. "But burnout is real, so we recommend they participate in at least one complementary sport. There are so many complementary sports that can help hockey players.  READ MORE>>
DETROIT COMPUWARE GIRLS
BACK IN BUSINESS
By Mike Scandura ~ Detroit Compuware was founded in the mid-1970s, but the association didn't add girls hockey until 2009 with the formation of 12U and 14U teams.  One year later, a 16U team was added. The club expanded to include a 19U team in 2012.  "We've grown into the age divisions," said Bob DeSpirit, associate youth director. "We started with 12s and 14s to make sure we were doing it right.  "As the girls matured and moved up in age divisions, the 16s and 19s were added." READ MORE>>

SAMPLING PROGRAM GETS MORE KIDS IN THE GAME
USA Hockey, working in collaboration with the Aspen Institute, the Cheyenne Mountain School District and fellow sport NGBs, has created an after-school sport-sampling program designed to provide low-cost, high-benefit physical education for school children.  The program's purpose is to enhance children's physical literacy, combat early single-sport specialization and offset the reduction in physical education that has occurred in many elementary and middle schools throughout the United States. ISOBEL CUP AT BEANTOWN CLASSIC
By Laura Berestecki  ~  When Blake Bolden found out that she would be getting the Isobel Cup during the Beantown Classic, she knew she wanted to let as many fans see the Cup as possible. The Beantown Classic, which is held in Marlborough, MA, is one of the top amateur showcases for female hockey players.  Bolden reached out to fans via social media to let them know she would be bringing the Cup to the event and to encourage them to come take pictures with it. It was particularly important for Bolden to be able to share the Cup with the younger players. Being able to see how happy the players and their families were to see the Cup was rewarding for Bolden, who hoped to encourage the girls to keep working hard to achieve their hockey dreams.  READ MORE>>
