TAKE 5 WITH NEW GIRLS ADM REGIONAL MANAGER, EMILY WEST
|
By USA Hockey Magazine ~ USA Hockey is proud to welcome Emily West as the new ADM manager for female hockey.
Emily grew up in Colorado Springs, Colo., and played youth and high school hockey in Colorado before playing at the University of Minnesota. At Minnesota, she was a captain for two seasons, won two regular season championships, was a Patty Kazmaier Award nominee in 2010 and won the WCHA championship and the NCAA National Championship in 2011-12.
Prior to joining USA Hockey, she worked at The Arena in Colorado Springs, a multi-sport training facility, and has helped coach girls' hockey in Colorado and high school hockey in Bemidji, Minn.
USA Hockey Magazine sat down with West to discuss her new role and her thoughts on the growth of girls' hockey around the country.
USAH: You grew up playing youth hockey in Colorado and then attended the University of Minnesota. How do you think that experience will help you in your new position?
EMILY: When I was growing up in Colorado, girls' hockey was not really popular. I played boys' hockey before eventually making the switch to a girls' travel team. I was fortunate enough to go to school in Minnesota, which is the land of hockey. I've seen both ends of the spectrum with girls growing up playing hockey and the battles we faced in Colorado and then seeing how popular girls' hockey is in Minnesota. I think my experience in college and the benefits that I had from great coaching along with the fact that I love kids will translate very well to this job.

Want to be part of the 2018 Illinois Girls America's Showcase Team?
By Anita Lichterman, General Manager ~ Hello female hockey players & families! 2018 will mark the 3rd year that Illinois has fielded a Girls' team for the America's Showcase. Once known as the Chicago Showcase, USA Hockey renamed it the America's Showcase when the tournament was moved to Pittsburgh. After 8 years in Pittsburgh, the Showcase is now coming back into the Central District and will be held in St. Louis, Missouri April 19-22, 2018.
The Showcase is designed for high school junior and senior female hockey players who have not yet committed to a college or university and would like an opportunity to be seen by college coaches and scouts. The 2017 Showcase featured 8 teams from across the country and played host to over 25 college coaches and scouts who were in attendance strictly to see female hockey players. This year we anticipate even more colleges to be in attendance.
AHAI would like to take this opportunity to invite all female players (Tier I, Tier II and High School) who are interested in trying out for the 2018 Illinois team to let us know. The fee to participate is $400 per player (same as 2017's fee), and includes practices, practice jersey, game jerseys (home & away), game socks, Showcase entrance fee and hotel room.
Again, this is primarily for high school junior and seniors who have not yet committed to a college or university. However, interested sophomores should also feel free to contact AHAI.
Additional information (the official invite letter, Showcase rules, etc.) will be published in the December 4th issue of AHAI's newsletter, SNAPSHOT. If you don't receive AHAI's e-newsletter, text "AHAI" to 22828 to subscribe or click HERE. We look forward to hearing from you!

3rd Annual Girls in the Game Benefit
By Coach Courtney O'Connor, Team Illinois ~ For the past 5 years, I have worked with an organization I am passionate about called
Girls in the Game (GITG). Their goals are to promote confidence and leadership through sports; they provide girls in the Chicago area with after school programs, summer camps, leadership workshops, and other amazing programs to achieve their goal. It has been amazing to be able to partner Team Illinois with GITG the past few years and we are excited to continue to grow this event at our new home, Seven Bridges. At Girls in the Game, the focus is on the Whole Girl: Mind, Body and most importantly, Future. They empower girls to take ownership of their lives by being active, embracing healthy habits and acquiring the skills they need to grow up strong and confident.

Skill Sessions Working Wonders in Massachusetts
By Mike Scandura ~ When Massachusetts Hockey decided to hold special skill development sessions for boys and girls, they did so with specific goals in mind.
"There aren't always enough skill development-specific training opportunities during the season to make an impact," said Massachusetts Hockey Girls Player Development Coordinator Ed Bourget. "By adding these sessions, we're giving players a tool box and showing them what a high-level practice looks like, so they can have the tools to prepare themselves and get better. READ MORE>>

There's No Shortage of Inspiration for Meghan Duggan in Quest for Olympic Gold
By Michael Blinn, Sports Illustrated ~ One of Meghan Duggan's most prized possessions is a cereal box. It's not just any cereal box, though.
The box depicts the gold medal-winning U.S. women's hockey team from the 1998 Olympics in Nagano. It's an important piece of memorabilia from her youth, something that helped inspire her career as a professional hockey player. The current captain of the U.S. national team also seeks out a gold medal of her own.
"When I set the goals and dreams for myself to make this team, I used to look at that box a lot and think how cool it would be to be on a box like that one day," she said. READ MORE>>
