National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies
|
|
Industries throughout the United States have been hampered by the growing talent gap as more than 10,000 baby boomers retire each day. As challenging as this statistic might seem to the general business world, it’s even more so for the insurance industry.
The National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies has embarked on an expanded scholarship campaign through its Mutual Insurance Foundation, with the goal of raising $125,000 for deserving collegiate upperclassmen who are working toward a degree in insurance/risk management. Scholarships of up to $5,000 will be awarded to qualified applicants. The scholarship program is also open to students studying in other areas such as general business, finance, computer technology, or predictive analytics/modeling.
“Our industry is facing a wave of retirements across the country, yet less than five percent of this nation’s college students are considering insurance as a viable career choice. And even fewer know about or understand the mutual difference,” said Neil Alldredge, executive director, NAMIC Mutual Insurance Foundation. “So, NAMIC is taking up the mantle to raise the profile of the mutual insurance industry among college students and faculty. We believe that once they learn about mutuals they will appreciate the work we do and will consider or promote mutual companies as a career option.”
Students must be U.S. citizens and plan to find permanent employment in North America to be eligible for the scholarship. The monies will be forwarded directly to the school where the student will attend for the fall semester 2020 or fall semester 2021. To apply, students must complete an online application, which opened on Jan. 31. All required documents must be uploaded no later than March 31. Scholarship recipients will be notified by mail by early May.

Risk Manager in Residence Grants
The Risk Manager in Residence program inspires students by bringing risk managers and their brokers into the university classroom to share real-world challenges and opportunities. With grants of up to $4,000, the Foundation has sponsored over 300 programs since 1997, reaching thousands of students. Risk managers are invited to speak about specific risks at their company, advise students on career directions and give back to the industry. These visits also raise awareness of the importance of risk management to universities who currently offer one or no insurance courses on campus. If you are interested in bringing this experience to your classrooms, please visit our web site at
www.spencered.org
