Dear TCHP Supporter,

As 2022 comes to an end, we want to thank you for your generous support. Gifts of monetary donations and volunteer hours continue to help us give hope to hungry kids. This year, with your support, we have provided 102,221 weekend food packs to some of Brevard County’s most vulnerable children. Your support of The Children’s Hunger Project provides essential weekend nutrition to at-risk Brevard County students.
“None of us want hunger to become the barrier to a child reaching their potential in their future.”
Dr. Mark Mullins, Brevard Public Schools Superintendent
Looking around, we see the evidence of families struggling with the soaring costs of rent, gas, and groceries. So many households are forced to make trade-offs between important basic needs and purchasing nutritionally adequate foods. As Brevard schools continue to see families depending on school meals to feed their children, staff members are reaching out to us for our help. The first few months of the 2022-23 school year has increased our demand for weekend nutrition from 2900 to 3500 children per week and we realize our work is far from done. But with every additional food pack provided, we know one less child will struggle with hunger over the weekend. Studies show that hunger greatly impacts a child’s academic performance and behavior. Hungry children have lower math scores, are more likely to repeat a grade, and have poor attendance due to illness.
When students receive weekend food, Brevard teachers report visible improvement in:
Improved social skills
Academic performance and attendance
Focus and interest in daily school activity
Every child has the right to healthy nutritious food, giving them the opportunity to reach their full potential. Hunger and hardships don’t take a break on the weekends. With your help, we can ensure that hope for these kids doesn’t either.

Sincerely,

Cheryl Cominsky
Executive Director
A Thank You from our Kids
“If I don’t have food, my stomach feels empty and it hurts. I feel 'hangry' and no one likes that.”

A school counselor tells the story of how it feels to tell a struggling mother, “This amazing organization has blessed our school with some weekend meal packs for the kids, do you think that would be something that you are interested in?” Then to hear the mother crying on the phone because this seemingly small gesture has just helped to lift a heavy weight off her shoulders.

“My mom most appreciates the meal packs for the milk. I appreciate the meal pack simply because I have food to eat.”

A staff member from Meadowlane School told us of a single mom raising five kids. The family moves from a motel to their car and sometimes, is able to stay with others. Our food packs help sustain this family over the weekend, allowing these students to return to school Monday, ready to learn.
