GIW is Heading to FootageFest: New Collections, Visual Search

Global ImageWorks will be back at FootageFest, October 1-3 at BRIC House in Brooklyn. It's been a busy stretch since we last gathered: we've added new collections and dug deep into our archive to surface new material. Stop by our table. George Schlatter Collection. Leading the new arrivals is a trilogy from George Schlatter, producer of Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In and a pioneer of reality television. The first, Real People, ran six seasons and more than 160 episodes, finding the eccentric and the overlooked across America: a rocket scientist building a spacecraft in his garage, a water-skiing squirrel, Tuskegee Airmen reunions. Speak Up America and Look At Us went further, covering the Love Canal disaster, the Rust Belt's collapse, and immigration along the U.S.-Mexico border. Together, the three series are a candid record of America moving into the 1980s.

Citiwide News Collection. We've opened the vault on this decade of raw crime and breaking news footage, shot mostly at night between 2004 and 2014 by former police and fire dispatchers who were almost always first on the scene. It's unedited and includes shots that fit any city or suburb: bullet casings, detectives searching for evidence, the wreckage of a high-speed crash. It's never been licensed before, and we can search it down to the frame level with our new visual search tool.

Andrew Czezowski and Susan Carrington Archive. We've also added photographs and ephemera from the personal archive of these two pivotal figures in London's punk and nightlife scene. The couple opened the Roxy in Covent Garden in 1976, an epicenter of the punk movement, and later ran the Fridge in Brixton, which shaped decades of New Wave, house, and trance culture. Their photos, flyers, and posters place the viewer at the center of these musical movements, the venues, and the artists who performed there.

Mark Morris Footage. We've recently begun onboarding footage from cinematographer Mark Morris. Highlights include 2000s prison footage shot at Pelican Bay, generic enough to double for other U.S. prisons; Hong Kong establishing shots from 1994; and 1990s Los Angeles, from Beverly Hills mansions to restaurants, bars, film studios, freeway traffic, and airliners landing at LAX. Also included are home movies from the 1930s to the 1970s.

We're very excited about our new visual search tool. The results have been great! It's currently being used internally on research requests, including on offline and newly onboarded collections, so if we couldn't find something for you last time, ask again.
