GLOBE Implementation Office (GIO) Transition

Looking Forward to Working with You!

The GLOBE Implementation Office (GIO) is undergoing a transition, as teams from Education Development Center (EDC) and City University of New York (CUNY) begin their work to support the GLOBE community. We would like to thank UCAR for their commitment to GLOBE. You can find details about the transition in this recent announcement.

Members of the new GIO team will be at the 2024 GLOBE Annual Meeting. We hope to see you there.

Happy World Ocean's Month!

GLOBE Observations from Sea!

To celebrate World Oceans Day (8 June) and U.S. National Ocean Month this June, we are excited to share an inspiring story map, “Sailing for a Sustainable Ocean” by GLOBE alumna, Ashlee Wells.

In March 2024, Ashlee and a group of fellow students from around the world sailed on the tall ship MIRAIE across the western Pacific Ocean from Yokohama, Japan, to the Micronesian republic of Palau—a trip of approximately 2,000 nautical miles! The students were immersed in leaning about, and doing, marine science with guidance from GLOBE’s Christina Buffington, a science and education specialist at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and GLOBE’s Cheryl Williams, a recently retired teacher at Palmer High School, Palmer, Alaska.

Trees Around the GLOBE Webinar: Wrangling of Tree Data

25 June 2024, 1 PM ET [25 June, 17:00 UTC]

This webinar will highlight lessons and online data to help educators assist students in bridging the gap between the ground-based GLOBE measurements and the satellite data. Often, students have a difficult time completing the link between the data they collect and the data returned from the satellites. Email Brian Campbell if you are an educator interested in joining the webinar.

One Million Geostationary Satellite Comparisons

At the end of May, the GLOBE Clouds team met a significant milestone. They matched 1 million GLOBE Clouds observations to geostationary satellite data! You can help the team get to 2 million by downloading the GLOBE Observer app and observing the clouds near you. Learn more about the NASA GLOBE Clouds protocol and how researchers are matching GLOBE Clouds observations with satellite data to create a deeper understanding of clouds.

Talking to Scientists about Trees and Land Cover Research, Technology, and Citizen Science for Understanding Our Planet

The key for developing new technology to advance science is asking good questions, says Dr. Bruce Cook, research scientist and project scientist for the Landsat Next mission at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. “It’s really not about putting the parts together. It’s coming up with the good ideas. I’ve seen a lot of people get enamored about the technology, but it’s really being able to answer the questions about so what, and why anyone should care.” Watch the full interview with Dr. Cook and Dr. Sorin Popescu in this month’s science blog.
