GLOBE Space Apps Challenge


The NASA International Space Apps Challenge kicks off on 5 October 2024. This year, one of the 20 challenges is the GLOBE Protocol Games, in which students create games that integrate GLOBE protocols. (Note: Some GLOBE teams are still looking for members, if you are already signed up for the challenge but haven’t yet picked a team!) Registration is closed but you can still participate through two upcoming events. Read more.

eTraining Module Rollback


GLOBE reverted to the PowerPoint-based eTraining at the end of September. If you were in the middle of a module but didn't complete the associated assessment test, you will need to restart the eTraining for that protocol. Learn more.

Revised GLOBE Program Logos


The GLOBE Program logos have been updated with a slight but important change to better reflect the program's registered trademark. On the GLOBE Logos webpage, the word "The" has been removed from all logos. Please make sure to use the new logos in any new promotional or report materials.

October Technology Update

GLOBE's Data Information Systems staff continue working through a major GLOBE website system upgrade. Website users are not likely to see results until 2025. Until then, changes to the website should be limited to content updates.

Mission Mosquito 

GLOBE scientist Rusty Low was invited by the U.S. State Department Speaker’s Program to meet with ministry officials and scientists throughout Costa Rica to discuss the current dengue pandemic in the Americas and the Caribbean and to introduce the role GLOBE Observer can play in reducing the burden of mosquito vector-borne disease. Trees Around the GLOBE

The Trees Around the GLOBE campaign launches Year 7 of its webinar series. The first webinar will be held 15 October 2024. Learn more.


Urban Heat Island Effect

GLOBE Mission Earth invites educators, citizen scientists, and students all over the world to participate in the Urban Heat Island Intensive Observation Period (UHI-IOP) throughout October. Teachers and students can be part of this important effort by collecting data on surface temperature, air temperature, and cloud observations. Learn more.

2025 International Virtual Science Symposium (IVSS)


The theme for the 2025 IVSS is 30 Years of GLOBE: Understanding Data Past, Present, and Future. Students may submit projects to IVSS from 1 December 2024 to 5 March 2025. Learn how to participate by watching a recording of the informational webinar. Join us on 9 October 2024, 17:00–17:45 UTC, for a webinar on accessing data from the GLOBE database. John Francis, Planetwalker, in South Africa Spreading the Word About GLOBE and Kindness

Dr. John Francis is currently walking across South Africa to promote environmental awareness and kindness while engaging communities in environmental data collection with GLOBE Africa. As they trek from Plettenberg Bay to Rietbron and onward toward the Botswana border, Dr. Francis and fellow walkers are taking GLOBE observations. In September, he was joined by former GIO Director John Ristvey! Read about their visit to schools and follow Dr. Francis's progress and observations on GLOBE’s Planetwalk Africa webpage.

GLOBE Asia and Pacific Soil in Schools Campaign

Since its launch on 1 September 2024, the GLOBE Asia and Pacific Soil in Schools Campaign has received enthusiastic participation from students across the region, with 134 registrations from countries. Upcoming activities include soil observations, data analysis, and research presentations.

24–28 November 2024 | Student Experience: Expedition to the Sea in Maldives

The GLOBE Asia and Pacific Regional Coordination Office aims to bring together students, teachers, and the scientific community from the Asia and Pacific region to collectively “learn through observation” about how man-made and natural events are affecting our oceans and other water systems.

My Tree in Autumn: Europe and Eurasia Autumn Phenology Campaign

Running from September to November, this Autumn Tree (Phenology) Campaign offers three short activities designed to guide Europe and Eurasia school teams through the greening-down of trees. Watch a recording of the introductory webinar. There's still time to sign up for the campaign!

More Than 200 Schools Participate in GLOBE Ireland's Air Quality Campaign 

GLOBE Ireland is excited to launch its Air Quality Campaign this autumn with over 200 schools across all counties in the Republic of Ireland! In preparation, nearly 100 teachers participated in online training sessions this September to get ready for the campaign.


Country Collaboration Leads to Lithuania Educator Training

With the help of two Estonia Trainers, GLOBE Lithuania carried out its latest educator training. Twenty-three new educators were trained at Žagarė Regional Park on 9–11 September 2024.

GLOBE Czech Republic Students Plant a “Tiny Forest” at Their School for Research

A “tiny forest” is a small school forest planted right next to a school (especially focusing on urban schools), with the aim of bringing children and nature together. Read about a GLOBE school in the Czech Republic that succeeded in creating such a forest.

Seminar Series on the 2024 Annular Eclipse 

Read about this three-part seminar series presented by LAC regional and country leadership to share information with GLOBE educators about the annular eclipse that took place on 2 October. This phenomenon (which included a “ring of fire”) was visible in the southern part of South America, including Argentina and Chile, as well as in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans and Antarctica.

North America Phenology Campaign 

Students are invited to join the Leaf and Learn Exchange and share their results, whether they are just beginning their green-down measurements or have already completed them. Visit the Analyzing and Communicating Phenology Data page for ideas on how to use data to tell a story and for video tutorials on data entry and data analysis using the GLOBE Visualization System. Entries must be submitted by 22 November 2024.

A Call for Daily Observations of Fall Color to Support Student Research Campaigns

GLOBE students across North America and Europe are working together to document seasonal change this September through December. The Trees Within LAC (Latin America and Caribbean region) Campaign is also collecting information about local tree species and their dynamics over time. Volunteers of all ages and in all countries are invited to support their work by collecting data on trees and land cover with GLOBE Observer. Learn more.

The late Dr. Pornpun Waitayangkoon, GLOBE Thailand Country Coordinator

In Remembrance: Dr. Pornpun Waitayangkoon 

We are saddened to share that on 26 August 2024, GLOBE lost a great treasure with the passing of Dr. Pornpun Waitayangkoon, GLOBE Thailand Country Coordinator.


Dr. Waitayangkoon had been with GLOBE since 1999 and was instrumental in supporting the GLOBE Program in Thailand. Share stories about her life and work with GLOBE on Facebook.
